Practical Tips for Staying Green While Traveling

Staying-Green-while-Traveling

Traveling is one of the best experiences there is. It is a way to relax and to learn as we explore what the world has to offer. Travelling can also be good for our mental health. But there is also a cost associated to travel, particularly environmental. So why are’nt we giving back to the world by keeping it green while traveling?

We owe it to the environment, and ourselves play our part in taking care of the Earth. That part can be fulfilled while travelling as well. So here are some things that can help you in that direction.

Before You Leave

Planning-Green-travel

Staying green while traveling really starts before you leave. Here are some tips to you can follow:

Plan accordingly

Consider your destination when choosing your mode of transportation. When traveling to a destination 500 miles or so away, flying non-stop via coach is actually the greenest option. This is especially true if you’re traveling solo or with a significant other.

Generally speaking, traveling by bus is the greenest way to go. The carbon footprint of buses is not even half a pound of CO2 per traveled mile.

Whatever you do, don’t use an SUV or first-class seat. You’ll be traveling in style, yes, but you won’t be a green traveler.

It’s also a good idea to do your research so you can book a green hotel. Contact hotels before booking and ask them about their green initiatives. Better yet if possible, stay with a family or friend at your location.

Pack light so you can travel light

Pack-light-baggage-2

You may not know it yet, but the extra pounds of baggage can add to your carbon footprint. Why do you think airlines charge for extra baggage? It’s because the heavier the load is, the more energy is needed.

The same thing applies even if you’re traveling by land. Cars with heavier loads will leave a bigger carbon footprint.

This is why it’s important that you plan ahead. How many days is the trip going to be? Where are you going? What activities are you going to do? Knowing these things can help you pack light so you don’t have to pack the things that you won’t need.

It’s also a good idea to pack reusable shopping bags in your luggage. They’re light and can help you stay green while out shopping at your destination. You can also carry a water bottle so you can simply refill at water fountains instead of buying bottled water.

Unplug all your appliances before leaving

It’s not enough that you turn off home appliances. Unplug all appliances before you leave because no one’s going to use them anyway, unless of course someone is getting left behind. In that case, make sure to remind him to conserve energy.

At Your Destination

Staying-Green-at-Your-Destination

Here are some tips to stay green on your vacation:

Shop local

It’s a good way to support the local economy. As a bonus, you’ll be helping out the environment by shopping for local food and products. Locally-made and produced food and products have a smaller carbon footprint. You’re enabling them by supporting them, allowing them to continue what they’ve been doing.

It also helps that local produce, especially organic ones, are healthier.

Make sure to be mindful when shopping for souvenirs. Try to determine the carbon footprint of the souvenirs that you’re looking at. Make sure not to buy a souvenir made out of endangered animals. You’ll be supporting an illegal trade if you do so, and could get you in trouble when you reach customs.

Use the shopping bag that you packed. Make sure to bring the reusable water bottle with you as well especially if you’re walking so you won’t get tempted to buy bottled drinks.

Move around the green way

Move-around-the-green-way

The best way to do so is to just walk around. It has no negative effect on the environment, it’s healthy for you, and it allows you to observe, explore and admire your destination. Another activity you can engage in is watching wildlife.

You can also bike around. You can simply rent a bike at your location. For longer destinations, you can use public transportation.

If you have to rent a car, rent a hybrid one. The car rental company will tempt you with upgrades. Some of them are even free. Politely decline them because these upgrades usually add to the footprint.

Stay green at the hotel

Stay-green-at-the-hotel

If you’ve been staying green at home, there’s no reason for you not to do the same at the hotel or place where you’re staying at. Simply do the things you’ve been doing at home at the hotel. These include turning off the lights when not in use, keeping the showers short, turning off and unplugging appliances when not in use and the likes.

Reduce, reuse and recycle

These are basic tips that apply everywhere. A good hotel should have a recycling program so make sure to ask ahead. If you’ve been given something that can be reused, like containers, make sure to reuse them to prolong their life.

Of course, it’s a good idea to reduce usage of things like containers, especially those that are non-perishable.

Make sure to dispose your trash accordingly!

Follow these Tips for your Next Trip

As you can see, you can still travel and stay green. Traveling is such a necessity nowadays, whether for business or pleasure, or even just a weekend getaway. You don’t have to give up traveling. You just have to make sure that you stay green. This can help sustain the travel industry because it’s heavily-reliant on the environment. Simply put, if we don’t take care of the environment, there won’t be a travel industry to speak of.

Few Essential Steps To Volunteer Ethically While Seeking Great Volunteers Opportunities

As eager volunteers, you need to understand this at the very beginning that not all non-profit standards are doing good work. Thus, instead of origin with planning, you must take a few steps back and understand the core problems which development projects often face when they bring in people and ideas from the West. Many volunteer projects really foster dependency on international aid and even compromise the integrity and dignity of people.

Step 2: Choose An Appropriate Volunteering Job

There are numerous ways through which you can volunteer and travel for free. Assess your commitment to time and your individual volunteer motivations. That includes-

  • Placement Companies

Goal for very niche or specific volunteer experiences along with long or short time commitments.

  • Independent Volunteering

These are ideal for long-term travelers and people on a flexible round-the-world trip who don’t even know when or where they might be travelling.

  • Volunteers

These can be very valuable, and the ratio of offering voluntary service can really vary considerably. However, these give a high level of facilitation and are ideal for those on a short trip.

Step 3: Do A Research On Organization’s Of Your Area

Your preparation for seeking new volunteers opportunities abroad where you can start with the search of the primary databases to find projects which exist in your specific area of interest. Go through the types of volunteering and check what their requirements are. Keep track of these details since it will help you in deciding on the volunteer job, right for you.

Step 4: Ask The Right Questions

Your final step is to vet the volunteer exchange program which you have researched on since this will allow you to narrow down your list. Follow it diligently since plans often come with heartbreaking consequences which are not sensitive to the needs of the people they serve. Ask your business few questions like-

  • Where does the money go?
  • How does the company work with the community?
  • What do you expect from the volunteers?

Once you diligently follow these steps, solely take a deep breath and start your dream job of volunteering all over the world!

Handicrafts belong to the long list of assets that are nurtured by Rajasthan’s rich culture. This infographic, created by Boontoon Handicrafts, shows how different materials are shaped by the artisans in diverse families of handicraft.

Wooden handicrafts use carvings as the main method of decoration while metals, like silver and copper, are forged to form the ornate articles we see. Marble, and sometimes red sandstone, is sculpted into required shapes and polished to create lustrous pieces. There are also the world-renowned Meenakari designs whose intricacy is a remnant of the persian culture.

My Cultural Connection with Karnataka – Ramachandra Guha

0

Karnataka-Ramachandra Guha

I was fortunate enough to hear the renowned historian Ramachandra Guha at a talk show organised by Karnataka Sangha in my hometown, Shivamogga. In his talk “Karnataka Naa Kandathe”, he spoke fondly about his nostalgic memories of coming to the state as a young boy and later residing in Bengaluru. Rather than give you my version of his thoughts, I would rather quote him verbatim (edited).

“Way back in 1960s, I used to come regularly to the state of Karnataka every summer to stay with grandparents. My first identification with Karnataka in the 1970s was through cricket. Although I resided in Dehradun, which was part of Uttar Pradesh, I became a big fan of the Mysore cricket team that played in the Ranji Trophy, which had three national players in it: EAS Prasanna, B S Chandrashekar and V Subramanya. That was an era of test matches happening once every two-three years. That was an era of Ranji Trophy matches when 20,000 people turned up to watch 3-day matches.

I was a witness to the match in Chinnaswamy Stadium when Karnataka cricket team beat Bombay for the first time in the semi-final of 1973-74 Ranji Trophy season. Bombay (later Mumbai cricket team which is different from the Maharashtra cricket team!) was a formidable cricket team winning 20 out of 22 titles, including 15 in a row from 1958 to 1973.  G R Vishwanath, my hero, walked in at one down after the opener Vijaykumar had departed quickly and the score was 0/1. Vishwanath was plumb LBW in front of the very first ball he faced, but the umpire ruled him not out and he then went on to score 162, along with Brijesh Patel who scored 100.

There was another miracle when Ajit Wadekar slipped and was run out. These two miracles set up the first ever victory for Karnataka against Bombay. The Bengali umpire, Ganguly, who gave Viswanath not out later went to Kolkata and boasted to Bengal cricketers at Eden Gardens, “I have done something you guys couldn’t do all these years, made sure Bombay didn’t win the Ranji Trophy!” After Karnataka defeated Bombay for the first time, every other Ranji Trophy team got the courage to beat this formidable team.

As a cricket lover, there was something about the quality of Karnataka cricketers that appealed to me: their fair play, their gentleman behaviour and their integrity. Not a single Karnataka cricketer was ever implicated in match fixing. I once wrote, “I don’t care if India wins or loses as long as Rahul Dravid gets runs and Anil Kumble gets wickets”. Rajdeep Sardesai once quipped “Guha’s excessive love for Karnataka team might cause another Cauvery dispute!”

Later my connection with the state was during my PhD study on Chipko movement and environmental movements across India. During 1980s, I travelled extensively across Karnataka and was closely associated with several environmental groups such as Samaj Parivartan Samudaya, Sahyadri Parisaravardini, CANE – Campaign for Alternatives To Nuclear Energy, etc. In those days fortunately, there were great leaders in Karnataka like Ramakrishna Hegde, who put scientists in charge of creating environmental policies.

During those days, I happened to interact with Shivarama Karanth who was fighting against for whom I have enormous respect. He was a multi-faceted personality who had 16 careers: a novelist, a playwright, a social reformer, an environmentalist, a politician, etc., and his autobiography is evidently called “Ten Faces of a Crazy Mind”.

In 1995, moved to Bangalore and became the permanent resident of this state and have had the great privilege of interacting with some great personalities, two of whom were literary stalwarts – U. R. Anantha Murthy and Girish Karnad. Particularly, I had great interactions with Anantha Murthy since he loved to debate with people younger than him. I have argued with him about Nehru, Lohia, and socialism. While we argued on many issues, our disagreement never led to hatred for each other. Recently, when Gauri Lankesh was killed, I went to meet Girish Karnad since she was a great friend to both of us. I said it is sad we are meeting now in a world that is no more conducting debates through arguments but rather through violence.

While Karnad and Anantha Murthy are big names in Kannada literature, I interacted with another little known writer, D R Nagaraj. We would regularly meet in Koshy’s café in Bangalore and discuss various issues. Nagaraj wrote a book “Flaming Feet”, which is a superb study on the Gandhi-Ambedkar debate on the issue of caste system and untouchability. Talking about this most important contemporary debate in Indian society, he felt that we can appreciate both of their views on Dalit emancipation and can find an underlying unity. He died suddenly in his 40s and I am still unable to overcome his death, whom I feel is the most influential cultural thinker emerging from this state.

The most remarkable aspect of the literary world of Karnataka is its linguistic diversity. Among the four remarkable writers in Kannada three did not even grow up speaking that language. D. R. Bendre’s mother tongue was Marathi; Masti Venkateswara Iyengar’s first language was Tamil; Girish Karnad spoke Konkani, while Shivarama Karanth most likely spoke Tulu and D R Nagaraj spoke telugu. Interestingly, of the four authentically ‘Kannadiga’ Jnanapith award winners, two, V. K. Gokak and U. R. Anantha Murthy, were by profession teachers of English!

India is the most ethnically, geographically and culturally diverse country in the world and Karnataka the most diverse state in India. If you travel from Bengaluru to Mysuru to Udupi, you will come across the historical temples in Somanathapura, dargahs in Srirangapatna, Buddhist stupas in Kodagu, Jain basadis in Mangaluru, temples in Udupi and their believers living in harmony. This is the thought I would like leave you with – Karnataka is a state that blessed with diversity.”

Selling Repackaged Nostalgia to Indian Consumers

0

Sounds from the Malgudi Days pluck them from their seats, into a lesson by Gulzar. The lesson is about the days gone by, about how the past tasted, smelled, and how it felt. It arouses a thirst for those days. A thirst which can only be relieved with Paper Boat.

This is the magic of Paper Boat- the drink, and Paper Boat- the feeling. ‘They’ are the elders of millennials and to them, nostalgia surely tastes good!

This successful beverage- that accounts for majority of parent Hector Beverages’ business- entered the market in 2013. The company is run by former Coca Cola executives- Neeraj Kakkar and Neeraj Biyani. They have previously launched the Tzinga Energy Drink.

The philosophy often stated by both Neerajs as the reason for its success is “ Behind every successful drink, is a memory”.

They wanted to produce drinks that were practical, delicious and were getting lost in the fast-paced urban life; drinks which failed to match strides with commercial soda based drinks.

“Drinks and Memories” and “Life Still is Beautiful”- the two slogans subtly define the paperboat branding and promotional campaign. The marketers have successfully associated fond memories with these drinks of the past.

“Hope, the boat” last monsoon. Its online campaign regularly sees promotion of short videos centred on memories.

Nostalgia is nothing new in the marketing circle. It has been used recurrently by brands as diverse as Bajaj Electricals and Maggi Noodles.

Phrases like “We Miss You Too ”, “ Maggi Mother ”, “ Welcome BackMaggi ”, were successfully used to relaunch Maggi after its crisis. Fortune Cooking Oil’s “Ghar Ka Khana ” is another example. Bajaj Electricals’ “jab main chota ladka tha… ” commercial, which tried to evoke nostalgia, has itself become part of childhood memories for many.

From the ‘Aam Panna’ and ‘Jaljeera’ from 2013, to ‘Kokum’ and ‘Jamun Kaala Khatta’, 12 flavours are currently offered. They are also working on a new drink called Kanji using purple carrots, which are being imported from Southern Turkey. The drink will be launched by this by this winter.

Paperboat’s success can be summarized in one word- Dedication. Dedication to authentic memories and pure flavours is why a space has been carved out in the densely populated packaged beverages market.

Chennai & London Have More in Common Than You Think

0

The two cities, at the distance of a night-long flight, are together home to more than 15 million people of the world. Their geographies are different, their accents, their beliefs, the infrastructure, even the air. But somehow we know there are flaws in the previous statement. So, in this article, we explore as to why Chennai shares a commonality with London that no other Indian city does?

Chennai-&-London-common-things-02

Diverse Population

London and Chennai are both sanctuaries of diverse ethnic groups and cultural minorities. 44% of London’s populace is comprised of ethnic minorities. Chennai also has more than 13 such groups. Interestingly, Chennai also has a small increasing Japanese population of around seven hundred. Although this is very small compared to London’s Japanese community, it is in sharp contrast with any other Indian city, and a similarity nonetheless. Also to be considered in this regard is the sizeable population of Indian Tamils in the English Capital.

English Roots

It will seem overly redundant to mention London’s English heritage, so we’re skipping that. But importantly interesting are Chennai’s English roots. Although many Indian cities evolved under the British, Chennai is special. The present day modern city has grown to its present from Fort St. George. The fort- set up in 1644- has the distinction of being the first English settlement in India. Located in an ancient fishing village, it worked as a factory for processing cotton textile. Initially, the European migrants worked in the factory and lived within the building. Gradually, the place took on a name very descriptive of its inhabitants- the ‘White Town’.

A Tale of Caffeine and Curries

Located in countries where tea is the favoured, these two cities are keeping the torch burning for coffee. In london, 80% of the adult population drinks coffee on a daily basis; that’s more than three million people. Chennai too loves its ‘Filter Kaapi’- a gift of the colonial period- that is now an invariable part of Chennai’s cultural character. Tamil Nadu accounts for 40 percent of the coffee consumed in India and its love for the filtered joe is only increasing.

Another common cuisine member is the curry. From the Chettinad Chicken or the Kayi Korma, both cities have their favourites. Londoners even host the ‘British Curry Awards’, which says nothing but about their love for the Indian-origin dishes.

The Cities Love Racquets

London loves Tennis, it has grand slam to show for it; also the yearly 38000 kilos of strawberries and cream. Chennai also harbours an open love for the sport. Until this year- The Chennai Open, an ATP 250 event- was held in the city. The coastal city has produced many world-class racqueteers like Mahesh Bhupati and the Amritraj Brothers. One of the brothers, Vijay Amritraj, starred alongside Roger Moore in the film Octopussy- as an ally to the famous Londoner James Bond! After this, how many more connections could one ask for?

Love in the Air

According to DGCA statistics, more than 120,000 people travel between Chennai and London every year. The traffic is multiple times higher than any other destination in Europe or the Americas. This can only mean one of the two things, either Chennai people simply love London, or maybe that they love an aerial tour of Europe. We somehow think it’s the first.

Memories are the Spice of Life

For all the things we buy and use on a daily basis, what truly drives us are our memories. Memories of special events with family and friends, funny stories we share, and breaking bread with those we care most about. When we share our memories, it’s usually not about the latest technological gadget or sporty vehicle we buy. It’s our experiences. Moments. We want to continuously have those moments. Many families get stuck in their mundane day-to-day lives and forget about making memories until a holiday rolls around. If you are looking to change that in your own lives, here are a few of our own suggestions.

Take a Trip

Everyone needs a break from school or work. We need to go somewhere that isn’t familiar and relax, explore, and engage with something just a bit different. Most often, we need to do it with our loved ones. Taking a family trip is an excellent way to create memories. To explore a new area, see new sights, and take a lot of pictures together. Finding a lodging solution with multiple locations, such as Welk timeshare locations, is a good start to finding a place to stay every time you take a trip. You can lounge all day at the resort and enjoy the pool, go golfing or relax at a day spa. You can sleep in all day after staying up all night watching movies. It’s a home away from home that can help you build some really great memories.

Visit Grandma

Many of us remember fondly of road trips to see grandma and that can still happen. It can happen with any family member or long distance friend. If you need a reason to get away, outside of just needing to get away, visiting family or friends is a wonderful way to create lasting memories. Getting together with our loved ones, making meals together, and reminiscing about the past and catching up with the present are what keep us feeling connected with our loved ones.

Get Crafty Together

If taking trips are not in the budget at the moment and you are longing to feel connected, take an afternoon and get crafty with each other. It can be as simple as creating a photo album of memories you already have, to making cookies together. It could be that you find a cute painting craft on Pinterest and decide to do that together. If it’s near a holiday, crafting some decorations will surely bring you all together to add extra enjoyment to the time and your holiday.

Do Something for the First Time Together

When family and friends get together to do something for the first time, it creates a special bond and a lasting memory. Maybe your first skydive can be with your mom, the first trip to the Grand Canyon is with your brother, or going off on a safari in Africa can be with Aunt Sue. Doing something amazing like this does not just create a memory, it could lead to a tradition.

Start A Family Tradition

Family traditions are fairly common. Always going to Uncle Bob’s house for Thanksgiving or Cousin Lindsey hosts the New Year’s party each year are a few common ones. Traditions don’t have to be big events, they can be tiny things. Maybe it’s making s’mores in the backyard after Friday night dinner. It could be that you always go to the beach the day after school lets out for summer. Or it can be as simple as making pancakes every Sunday morning.

Making memories is important. When we let the busyness of work and school get in the way, we are left feeling a little disconnected from our loved ones. Take the time to strengthen those bonds. You will be so happy you did when you look back at all the photos.
