To the much rejoice of Ahmedabadis (or Ahmedavadis),and the rest of the country, Ahmedabad is now a World Heritage City. For over 600 years, Ahmedabad has been a symbol of peace. It also houses some of the finest example of Indo-islamic architecture.

Ahmedabad’s proposal were, surprisingly, deferred by the OWHC (Organization of the World Heritage Cities) earlier in June. Finally, on July 9 2017, it was declared as India’s first World Heritage City.

But what is it that separates Ahmedabad from other old Indian cities?

The usual answer to this question involves invoking the 2600 Sultanate era monuments, or the grandeur of Sabarmati, or all the significant historical events that the city has witnessed, including the Dandi March.

But at the centre of all this talk about cultural heritage, and the OWHC approval, is a rather humble concept of Pols. In fact, it wouldn’t be altogether wrong to say that the city derives its heritage from these neighbourhoods.

Since the 15th century, these structures have served as an example of efficient community living. They are crucial identifiers of the city’s multicultural character.

Pols are the main streets with overarching Havelis is on both sides. Kharkiya are inner entrances to the Pols, which serve today to transport the visitors to a world lost in time. The 360-odd neighborhoods (or the Pur) are fine specimens of the coming together of modern urban living and the culture rich past of Ahmedabad.

An example of this synergy is the ‘Mahurat ni Pol’ which, as the name suggests, was the first Pol in the city. It houses more than 100 jewellery and bullion shops, and is a close neighbour to the Ahmedabad Stock Exchange Building-a symbol of modern economy.

Historically, each such neighborhood has been defined by a particular caste or community which, in essence, might suggest a form of social segregation. But now the city has progressed, and these differences have been replaced by the colorful market lanes.

The beautiful jaali structures, the wood based architecture, and the cool streets hidden away from the rough Ahmedabad sun, make one feel nothing but shades of calm, of harmony.

It seems almost as if- it is not only the sun that is kept away- but also the tryst-filled values of the world outside. It is this heritage, the epitome of in-community bondage, that has invited the long-deserved title.

Its true that you will never forget things you learn.. so take a moment and thank that person who taught you. A teacher can be your school teacher, your parents, your siblings, you relatives, your colleagues, your manager, your true friend or your enemy.. but one thing is for sure a teacher is a medium of communication through which God communicates with us. One must always remember the lessons so that they can teach it to their children.

An Unprejudiced Tale of Mumbai’s Dark Nights (Book Review)

0

Without Prejudice is the fine line between fiction and nonfiction. What starts out as a story of a young girl in the middle of something big, beautifully unwraps, or rather blossoms, into a story of bigger scheme of things intertwined with the life of a girl. The girl is Munia, a.k.a, Pallavi Singh. She is a victim of trafficking. Impervious to this fact, and its gory reality, she is brought to Mumbai, a place so very different from her humble village. Throughout the story, many figures cross paths with her, but the only one who matters is Rajkumar.

Without-Prejudice-Cover__Nopl-1
Devasis tells a beautiful story of connected lives that resonate with the metropolitan’s pulse

Theirs is a relationship that neither could have intended, and theirs is the story of the two cities contained in one, Bombay and Mumbai. The inert name change that began in 1995 is spurring unrealized changes to the complexion of the city. The decade is turning, one of the few last old features of the city is also changing, affecting thousands of lives. Pallavi’s life, caught in this entropy, is shaping differently too as the entry of a mystery man beckons revelations to questions she has asked her entire life.

Devasis-Chattopadhyay
Devasis Chattopadhyay

“…Pallavi was also there. She was sitting very quietly in a corner of the make-up room with knees pulled towards her chest and chin resting on them. She had faced similar situations before…” ;“…The police had raided the bar in search of underage and she was interrogated at length considering she had just entered the permissible age for dancing in a bar…”

Devasis, the author of this new-age romance, spins with his words a beautiful web of connected lives which deeply resonate the pulse of the metropolitan. A major part of the story are the details of the dour realities of human trafficking and the abhorrent treatment of women.

Without Prejudice begs to be read and brings forth with it the gritty world it tells the tales of- a world of women, from poor and desperate backgrounds, who are furthermore downtrodden and frowned upon by the cities.

If you sign up for a swim into and to understand the underbelly of a metropolitan, then this book awaits you. It glimpses into the harsh actualities of women’s lives in this patriarchal society and, with that, peeks into the world of erotic dancing.

Being “friendly” to nature is trend of the day. Pressure from stakeholders, consumers’ groups, and the need for finding sustainable sources of income are some factors driving new and old members of the corporate world towards this trend. A new breed of startups is emergent and dedicated to finding solutions for reducing, or even reversing, the damage that humanity is subjecting the environment to. Whatever the motives, a small step in the right direction by a part of the industry can further the goal of sustainability miles ahead.

So, whether you want to start a similar business, or simply wish to reduce your carbon & water footprint, these business niches will definitely be of help to you.

Eco-friendly landscaping

If you hire professional landscapers, your curb appeal will be flawless, but the maintenance might not be so good for the environment. Luckily, there are businesses that focus on eco-friendly ways and help homeowners make their yards greener, literally and figuratively speaking. They utilize tools and techniques, like drought-resistant plants, synthetic turf, and strategic placement of trees, which save water, energy and also, money.

Organic catering

When you combine the love for food with the respect for the environment you get an organic catering company. Such companies mainly cater to local events and use local, organic produce for the food. Such businesses also promote dietary diversity- the menus can include a wide range of meats, as well as various vegan, paleo-meal and gluten free options. So the next time you throw a block party, just make sure to avoid using paper and plastic food containers and to compost the leftovers. Find replacements that are organic and can resolve after throwing them.

Geotechnical Engineering

Second Hand Shops

The amount of usable products that the average, urban human declares waste everyday is upsetting.  Many companies have acknowledged the gravity of the situation and are trying to minimize the wastefulness. We don’t realize how much positive impact thrift shops, second-hand car dealerships, or used furniture stores have on the environment. So the next time you feel like reading something, consider buying a used book.

Composting

These urban humans don’t only generate material waste, but also, hard to recycle bio-organic waste. Instead of treating garbage as rubbish (pun inclusive), companies have started using food waste as a source of nourishment for the soil. Startups like these are turning garbage into compost, cardboards, and other useful commodities. This simple, eco-friendly fertilizer is the quintessential element of any organic farming setup.

Green Finance

The practice of green financing focuses on supporting local projects that put emphasis on eco-friendly and sustainable agriculture. Also, such finances are concerned with providing funds for artistic endeavors, educational opportunities and projects which support local ecology. Unlike some conventional companies, green finance aims to gain a social profit and to provide support for beneficial and important community-level projects. So, if you already own a finance company and you’re tired of corporate number-crunching, you can up your game and switch to green finances and give back to your community and environment.

Eco-friendly Beauty Salon

More and more consumers are becoming aware of what they are putting in their bodies, and how chemicals affect them and the environment. To cater to this consciousness, many organic and vegan products are popping up. You can research the web in order to find some home recipes to make your own products. You can use shampoos and conditioners made of natural ingredients, apply only organic makeup, or use nail polish without any harmful chemicals. This booming sector gives new businesses a lot of space to operate in.

When it comes to green business practices, there is still a lot to be learnt and explored. Nevertheless, there are hundreds of eco-friendly businesses that can inspire you to work towards change.

Filling a Health Insurance Claim? Focus on These 4 Key Points

0
Filling a Health Insurance

The process of filing a health insurance claim can be extremely overwhelming. Generally, the claim forms are complicated. Hence, even with all the help online, a majority of people find filling up these forms correctly a challenge. So, if you too are struggling with filling a health insurance claim form, don’t worry. You need to focus on these 4 key points.

1. Treatment Category

Standard health insurance claim forms, classify treatments as illness, injury or maternity. Claimants are often confused between the first two subcategories. Illness comprises medical management cases, day-care procedures and surgeries. The supporting documents required for each of them are different.

Injury includes self-fall, drunk and driving accidents, assault, poisoning etc. It matters if the police were involved or not, i.e. an FIR was filed or not or whether the hospital registered it as a medico-legal case. You are required to provide appropriate and sufficient documentary proof to support your claim if claiming under this subcategory.

2. Claim Amount

A majority of people claim an amount which doesn’t match their hospital bill value. This may be due to certain discounts which aren’t highlighted in the bill or if the person is claiming only partial amount of the bill. To avoid making mistakes, list down all the bills you want to claim and add up their total value. The claim amount must match this total value. All the supporting documents should be submitted as evidence. Even payment receipts should be submitted wherever possible. If the bill and receipt amounts differ, justification from the hospital should be documented with the claim.

3. Bank Details

Mostly, the claim is always in the name of the primary policyholder. The person whose name is registered on the policy by the insurance company is to be filled in the slot of primary policyholder name. Remember, the name should be consistent in the KYC and all the bank documents.

For individual retail policies, the proposer in the policy is the primary policyholder who himself or herself may not be covered in the policy. For corporate policies, the employee is the one who is primary insured or the primary policyholder. The claim amount is reimbursed in the primary policyholder’s account. Many people mention the patient’s bank account details even if he or she may not be the primary policyholder. This delays the claim process as the insurance company raises a query with the bank regarding the mismatch between the names of the account holder and primary policyholder.

4. ID Numbers

Generally, insurers tag a claim to the customer with the help of an ID number. People collect several insurance cards over years. Often they enter old ID numbers instead of the number of the period for which they are claiming. Also, a majority of corporate employees enter their employee ID instead of their health insurance ID number. They also forget to link the claim form to their corporate name. To avoid making mistakes in this field:

  • Ensure that the insurance card is of the period for which claim is to be filed. You can also call the customer care helpline of your insurance company. If their executive identifies the patient name with the provided ID number, it means that the number is correct.
  • If you are mentioning your employee ID, remember to mention corporate name somewhere on the form in a way that it is visible. Although, this might be a risky way for filing claim. Hence, always prefer to mention your correct insurance ID number only.

These 4 are the most common areas of mistake due to which health claims often gets rejected or delayed. If you understand them better, you are less likely to make mistakes. If you still lack confidence, you can always seek expert help.

Getting the Best Out of Tadoba Andhari Tiger Safari

If you are a wildlife enthusiast, then the Indian subcontinent holds a fabulous wealth of animal life in its numerous wildlife sanctuaries, National Parks, and tiger reserves. With a very high tiger density, ease of access, and a large assortment of accommodation, Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve, in central Maharashtra, is becoming increasingly popular. Some tips that can help you to enjoy your safari more:

Expect Your Safari to Be Tiring

Unpredictability is indeed one of the main attractions of a safari and you need to have loads of patience. Even though wild animals in tiger reserves are accustomed to tourists, they tend to be naturally elusive, especially when they are hunting or breeding. The morning safari that starts at 6 am is a wonderful opportunity for spotting animals, but you need to arrive really early at the gate so that you are one of the first visitors to enter. This basically means that you have to get ready really early, finish your ablutions and take a light snack before you start off from your Tadoba accommodation. Remember to carry some refreshments and drinking water. Ensure you are dressed appropriately; layered clothing is better as you can keep on adjusting to the changing conditions.

Get Yourself an Experienced Guide

If you are making your travel arrangements through a conventional tour operator, you might be tempted to take up their offer of a travel guide for the safari, however, make it a point to only engage a local forest guide with loads of experience as otherwise; you will really not be able to maximize your enjoyment. Like all wildlife sanctuaries, Tadoba’s animal movements keep on changing on a daily basis due to various factors. Only a guide who knows what’s going on will be able to get you to the best spots for observing the animals. On the other hand, a novice will keep on taking you on aimless trails that are a complete waste of time and money. Ask your friends who have been to Tadoba before to give you some good references. Without a proper forest guide, you can spend your entire trip without even being able to see a common fox, let alone a tiger.

Safety Is Paramount

On a jungle safari, never take risks, however innocuous they might seem. Always follow the instruction of your guide to the letter and do not get adventurous like getting off the safari vehicle. Even innocent-looking animals can be extremely dangerous so never do anything that might seem remotely threatening; sometimes even pointing a camera can provoke them. Carry a first aid kit and essential medicines, insect repellents, and a hand sanitizer. Do not litter or try to feed animals. Never attempt to light a fire as it can easily go out of hand.

Conclusion

The jungle is a strange and dangerous place. To enjoy your safari to the maximum, get yourself a good guide, and let him take charge. Be responsible, and never do anything that may put at risk the environment and the safety of both yourself and the animals.

The Potential of Animation for Tourism Industry

0

The-Potential-of-Animation-for-Tourism-Industry

Every day, countless pages of content are being put out online. The average web surfer is overwhelmed by thousands of marketers all vying for our attention. The tourism industry in particular has become such a busy field that it can be difficult to stand out amongst the thousands of travel businesses on the web.

However, by using low-investment animations, travel businesses and local governments can take their content marketing strategy to the next level. Many businesses struggle to present their products or services, let alone complex subjects like travelling and ecotourism, without bombarding them with masses of text and static images.

It can be very difficult to keep the attention of your audience and explain for example the variety of ecological and economical benefits of sustainable travelling. The tourism industry is discovering that animation can be a perfect medium to explore these concepts in depth and attract new customers and visitors.

Animation and regional promotion

One of the key elements of the tourism industry is being able to sell the audience on a faraway location. Animation is a suitable channel to communicate information also about a particular region. Businesses that want to go the educational route can produce an animated explainer video that discusses local customs.

A great example of this is Crash Course’s history of India animation, which takes a brief look at the caste system and the growth of Buddhism in the region.

The entire cities, regions or countries start to use animations to attract visitors in an original sometimes artistic way exploring different animation techniques.

Animated videos offer an unparalleled ability to communicate with a diverse audience. Counties can promote with animation also their major attractions and flagship events. A good example offers this promotional video explaining Tour De France in animation:

Educating with animation

One of the best animation styles for educational purposes would be animated explainer videos. In this type of movies a narrator takes the viewer on a journey, which is visualised on screen through animated graphics. As a means of communication, animated videos are extremely diverse.

Businesses all the way from travel agencies to travel apps like Travi and Safe Travels make use of animation to get their message out to customers.

Similarly, travel explainer videos are great for communicating with your target audience whilst keeping the format simple and entertaining. By making sure your marketing campaign is memorable you ensure that future customers don’t forget what value your brand stands for.

A look at animated explainer videos

A great example of how animation and ecotourism go hand in hand together is FarmerFinder’s animated video, which discusses how the business connects buyers and independent farmers together. Simultaneously it addresses the variety of different environmental and logistic problems farmers around the world are facing.

Similarly, the educational animation “Going Green” takes viewers through the ecological aftermath of the famous Ganesh Chaturthi Elephant-headed lord celebration, which includes the use of idols that will simply be thrown away polluting water supplies.

“Going Green” and FarmerFinder chose to use visual presentations to get their messages out there and help the drive towards sustainability and ecotourism. By using a video they can present their audience with more information without sending them to sleep.

Regions around the world, whether promoting travel destinations or regional problems could greatly benefit from using animation to communicate with both tourists and locals. With an animation it is possible to transport the viewer into a whole new visual world, and bring a desired discussion to life.

For instance, when watching those videos the viewer gains an understanding of the ecological issues highlighted as well as how to solve it. In both of the examples, the creators with a help of a professional animation studio have been successful in sending a clear message that could otherwise be lost.

Sending an Eco-friendly message

Animated videos are one of the best ways to communicate with your audience when dealing with compound issues like sustainability and eco-friendly travelling. Making use of animation will not only get your message out to the aware audience but also communicate your professionalism and associate your brand or region with certain values.

By entertaining the target audience with animated content companies and local authorities can provide more value than if they were to simply list services or regional features down on a webpage. Animated videos actively engage with your viewers and entertain them in a way written content never could.

Travelling Across Beloved Bengaluru on BMTC Bus

1

Last month, Namma Metro arrived in the city of Bengaluru in a full-fledged manner. After a decade of delayed construction, the metro rail is finally ready and Bangaloreans are flocking to it. This make me ponder if we Silicon City finally ditch the omnipresent autorikshaws and city buses. Urban analysts may think it will take a long time for citizens to move on to the Metro due to last-mile connectivity and vehicle parking issues, some of us believe city bus travel in Bangalore will be nostalgic memory one day.

However, I personally feel many of us would prefer the Metro at any cost since travelling in Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses is truly a herculean task! If you are planning to lose weight, you might as well take a ride in our city’s BMTC buses. You can lose or gain change while handling the tickets. You can fit into the minimum space available to the most comfortable amount of space for the most comfortable sleep you can get while sitting!!

The first time you ride a city bus, you will be anxious to not miss your bus stop. The next time, you will notice the inconsistency in bus timings. After a wait of nearly an hour, you will land up choosing between more than two buses on the same route. Chances are that you will either find a seat in both the buses or no seats at all! You may have to get used to wearing a sports shoe, for you need to run behind the bus that stops ahead of the bus stop and get it in the spot it stops!

After riding the bus a few more times, you are well geared to deal with situations. You will soon land up fighting with the conductor to extract change, curse a boy for not vacating a ladies seat or get badly stomped by hefty guy. Many of us would have heard such complaints but such stories that add up the misery.

Travelling on BMTC, you experience a different world that angers you and at the same time, brings a smile in your lips. Sometimes there are situations when there may be seats vacant in the ladies seat, but the rear part of the bus is almost full. But you will find conductors not allowing students with their massively heavy backpacks to sit on them, though they might have waited at the bus stop for a long time. These hapless kids hold monthly bus passes and hence do not pay for tickets, so they don’t deserve those seats!

Want to gain some patience and manage your anger? Try getting into a bus which is full. You will squeeze yourself into the bus and find your one foot to somehow found some space to settle. There are also times when you land up being the no-seat person from first stop till the last, while everyone who boarded with you got seats. Now comes a case when the driver applies brake suddenly and then you are hurled through the bus to land with a thud on the bonnet!

Then when you do get a seat, you have three bags on your lap (yours and two others of someone who standing beside you). For people like me who spends half the time travelling to college, I carry a small book to prevent me from falling asleep. Sometimes the traffic is so slow that I silently fall asleep and no amount of noise, jerk wakes me up. For such people, an inherent biological clock wakes me up just a stop before mine, this without any intervention!

Improving the System of Death Certificate Applications

0

Hindu_Cremation_in_India

Death certificates have always played an important role in sorting paperwork relating to the family concerned. It is one of the most important documents assisting with the fast-tracking and sorting out some of the diligence concerning the death, including religious rites, burials or cremations.

Death certificates help with a lot of the following

  • Proving that there was no foul play at the time of the death
  • Stopping work or commercial deliverables that an individual received like pension or relief in their old ages
  • Receiving an insurance claim so the family doesn’t have to go through the financial burden on losing someone close
  • Receiving the green light for religious burials or cremations

Death certificates have recently been in the news for a lot of reasons but the main one being the delay in applying and receiving them. At an age where everything is handled by the touch of a button without even having to leave the house, having to stand in a line for a death certificate doesn’t seem feasible.

There have been instances where loved ones have had to wait with the body of the deceased left in a morgue since there were issues and delays with the release of the death certificate. One can only imagine how an unorganized system can cause so much hardship to someone who is already going through a difficult time.

There have also been instances where people who have not passed away are marked dead through goof-ups in the paperwork and improper verification processes caused due to human error. Furthermore, these issues can be easily avoided if the entire system was automated to a point where there were checks and measures to go through the content and documents being uploaded. This would also free individuals to handle more important and relevant tasks thereby fast-tracking the entire system.

None of the above points are reasons why applying for the death certificate should be delayed or go through a process that generally takes that long. The system was a decade behind in getting an overhaul and in recent years, it has received one.

The entire application for a death certificate system has been taken online with people being able to do that in almost no time. The application process is now so simple, if you have all your documentation and the right clearances through the medical institute that rules our foul play, you could apply for a death certificate immediately. This makes the entire system a lot more feasible since it can be handled from home, which is better than having to travel all the way to the office, multiple times if the documentation does not add up or something is missing.

People can now log into a website and provide all their information and the details of the deceased individual thereby applying for a death certificate. They would also receive information like the list of supporting documents to be uploaded and can then work on collecting that information without having to figure additional changes after initiating the process. This digital and systematic system allows for a better process which being streamlined is automatically a lot faster and more efficient.

The Kolkatan Obsession with Indian Coffee House

0

Author – Monabi Basu

A casual visit to Kolkata can indicate that this bustling city is the epicentre of Indian intelligentsia. Everywhere you find people discussing today’s burning issues and disseminating their precious opinion on them. These intellectuals need a suitable places to gather and debate on global and local affairs. The most famous gathering places in Kolkata (or adda, as we Bengalis call it!) is the Indian Coffee House located on College Street opposite Presidency University.

Indian Coffee House

The Indian Coffee House is a restaurant chain in India, run by a series of worker co-operative societies. It has strong presence across India. Founded in 1876 as Albert Hall, the establishment began functioning as a coffee joint only in 1942, got its famous “Coffee House” name in 1947. Since then Indian Coffee House has been a constant place for people of all ages and all walks of life to gather around in a table, sip on coffee and munch on the food while discussing every topic under the sun.

Both of my parents studied in colleges located on or near College Street, and I heard both of them muse about the addas they had with their respective friends at the Coffee House. My father keeps telling me about how he bunked college classes to hang out with his friends there, while my mother shares stories of how she and her friends managed to share a single cup of coffee when there were ten of them!

I grew up listening to these stories, and by no coincidence, I also got into Presidency University. So Indian Coffee House soon became my go-to adda spot too. The first time I went to Coffee House, I was accompanied by my mother, who retold me the stories of her college days again, and ever since, I have been charmed evermore by that place.

Indian Coffee House

Like me and my parents before me, Coffee House is a go-to spot for a round of coffee and adda for hundreds and thousands of Kolkatans like me, and for people who work or study at institutions near Coffee House, the establishment is a constant go-to place. Coffee House has grown to become one of the signs associated with adda (sitting down and discussing with friends or acquaintances about random topics) in Kolkata.

The buzzing life at the Coffee House and its addas have been immortalized by Manna Dey in his famous Bengali song, “Coffee House er sei adda ta aj ar nei” (The adda at Coffee House is no more). Coffee House has had many illustrious patrons in the past; Satyajit Ray, Aparna Sen, Amartya Sen were some of the patrons of this establishment. The establishment was also the breeding place of many political movements.

Coffee House is also the epicentre of the Bengali Little Magazine movement, where many little magazines have originated. When the establishment was closed in 1958 by the management, the teachers of the then Presidency College and Calcutta University sent petitions to the Government and got it reopened, and the establishment still stands proud of it’s past and present.

Indian Coffee House

I head down to Coffee House at least once every week with my friends and seniors and engage in conversations about almost every topic under the sun. And around me, I see the other tables being occupied by college students engaging in adda after the college hours; office-goers discussing work with their colleagues; and retired people debate over politics and reminisce their days of youth. The common to all these circles is the coffee of this place.

Even though Indian Coffee House is primarily a place for food, we come here for the coffee and stay here for the endless addas and dividing one cup of coffee among ten or more people since it’s the last day of the month and we ran out of our allowances. Now, Coffee House is not just a simple coffee joint, it’s a way of life.
