Hyderabad-based architect and designer Sona Reddy will present her solo exhibition ‘Rooted’ at 47-A in Mumbai from 24 July to 16 August 2026. Featuring furniture, textiles and collectible objects, the exhibition brings together works inspired by botanical forms, everyday visual culture and Indian craft traditions. Open from 11 am to 7 pm, except Mondays, the exhibition is housed in the heritage gallery at Khotachiwadi, Girgaon.

A Design Journey Shaped by Nature

Rooted reflects years of observation, experimentation and collaboration. Rather than presenting objects as finished products, the exhibition reveals how ideas evolve through interactions with artisans, workshops and traditional craft practices. Botanical illustrations, the geometry of Madras checks and the colours and textures of everyday life serve as recurring references across the collection.

The exhibition explores how contemporary design can emerge from traditional making processes while remaining connected to material, place and memory. Through furniture, textiles and decorative objects, Sona Reddy examines the relationship between nature and craftsmanship, presenting works that are both functional and sculptural.

Highlights from the Collection

Among the featured works is the Rosa Collection, handcrafted in Jaisalmer stone and detailed with custom ceramic roses and delicate glass inlays. Rather than reproducing flowers literally, the collection captures the lasting impression of botanical forms through durable natural materials.

Other notable works include:

  • Floral Tapestry, where original hand-painted canvases are translated into intricate silk-thread embroidery on organza.
  • Pink Rose Collection, crafted in Indian Pink marble with handcrafted ceramic roses and glass detailing.
  • Channapatna Botanical Frames, celebrating Karnataka’s renowned woodcraft tradition while displaying preserved botanical illustrations dating back to 1834.

Together, these works demonstrate how traditional techniques continue to find new expression within contemporary collectible design.

Sona Reddy is the founder and principal architect of Sona Reddy Studio, established in Hyderabad in 2014. Her practice spans architecture, interiors and collectible design, with projects that combine sculptural forms, carefully considered material palettes and close collaboration with skilled craftspeople. The studio’s work often draws from cultural memory while embracing contemporary aesthetics.

In Rooted, this collaborative approach remains central. Every object reflects the contribution of artisans working across stone carving, ceramics, embroidery, woodworking and glass, reinforcing the exhibition’s emphasis on Indian making traditions.

47-A Continues Its Focus on Design

The exhibition takes place at 47-A, a gallery dedicated to art, craft and design located inside a restored 19th-century Portuguese-style house in Mumbai’s historic Khotachiwadi neighbourhood. Since opening in 2022, the gallery has developed a programme that explores the intersections of contemporary design, traditional craftsmanship and cultural heritage through curated exhibitions.

The venue itself forms an important part of the visitor experience, with the restored heritage building providing an intimate setting for exhibitions centred on material culture and design.
