Christmas Gift Ideas for Grandparents Who Live Far Away

Whenever there is a festival or a joyous occasion that calls for celebrations, you wish that all your friends and family members stayed as close to you as possible. But unfortunately, work and other commitments often make this impossible. That being said, physical distance should not come in the way of expressing your love and best wishes for your dear ones. With several service-providers offering a plethora of options these days, you can buy Christmas gifts online and send them to your loved ones. If you are planning to seek these services this holiday season and surprise your grandparents, here are some amazing ways of doing so.

Surprise the Old and Sweet Couple with Cakes & Flowers

Your grandparents deserve to be showered with a lot of love and respect because they are the ones who always pamper you and make you feel special. Children who grow up in the company of their grandparents are found to be more confident and affectionate in the long run. Now it’s time for you to thank them for all that they do for you. Today and during the upcoming Christmas festivities, you might be far away from them but surprising them with some gifts arriving just in time for Christmas morning would be such a happy and emotionally fulfilling thing to do.

If you are looking for gifting ideas, cakes and flowers top the list. Send a delicious dry-fruit cake frosted with cream that the old folks particularly love. You can also send them a plum cake if you are looking for a spin on the traditional Christmas cake. Write a heart-touching message on the cake itself, wishing them Merry Christmas and you can almost see the happiness in your grandparents’ eyes.

If you are planning on sending flowers, you have a number of options. A bunch of red, yellow, or pink roses is always the most expressive gift out there. If you are aware of which flowers are their favourite, you must send those floral arrangements to them. Certain flowers might also be a part of your childhood memories with your grandparents. A bit of extra care in choosing the flowers can communicate your message in a more touching way. You can also opt for flower combinations and mixed arrangements that are simply stunning. Whatever you choose, make sure that the bouquet is prepared well and will last for a few days for your grandparents to cherish it.

Christmas Hampers & Gift Baskets

If you explore the online space a bit, you will also find several Christmas gift hampers and gift baskets that may turn out to be the ideal Christmas gift for your grandparents who live far away. These baskets usually contain cakes, cookies, dry fruits, flowers and sometimes, even tea, coffee and more. The best thing about these hampers is that they can be customized as per your requirements. You can carefully pick and choose cookies, chocolates, cakes or other edibles that your grandparents are fond of.

Personalized Christmas Gifts

Last but not the least, there are quite a few types of personalized Christmas gifts that you can send to your grandparents. For instance, you can get a mug with a picture of your Grandpa and Grandma or some other treasure-worthy photo from your childhood. However, when it comes to Christmas, cakes and flowers are a must as they are the perfect accompaniment for any other gifts that you send.

India is a land of rich cultural heritage, which is enriched by myriad forms of folk arts as well. These folk art forms are an embodiment of the diverse cultures within the country and each one is different and unique from the rest. Every Indian state has its own folk art form, which are all beautiful and breathtaking. However, these art forms have been on the decline, some time back, but thanks to rising interest of people again in local arts, they have been thriving. Here are some of the best known folk art forms of India that are flourishing today with a well-established market for their artefacts –

The Bengal version of the art is called “Pata Chitra” and the paintings have an identifying feature of vibrant colours. These colours were extracted from spices, soot, earth, flowers and a variety of other natural things. The art form depicts retrograde social practices in order to prevent people from doing it. Developed hundreds of years before, the art is synonymous of the time when vagabond minstrels used to travel the state singing folk songs about life and struggles.

A recent style called Karuppur has the fabric enhanced with a golden brocade and is meant for royal families.

Rajasthani miniatures have a strong presence in Mewar (Udaipur), Kotah, Bundi, Jaipur and Kishangarh regions of Rajasthan. Drawn on paper, ivory, marbles, leather, walls, wooden tables, floors and leather this folk art form uses unique exaggerated features. These include large eyes which are almond shaped, long fingers and long necks. Originally from Persia and brought in by the Mughal invaders, this painting now possesses strong influence from the regions of Rajasthan.

Dhananjay Chakraborty’s Subuj Rath – Spreading Eco-awareness

The thing that sustains the inertia in us is also a source of change. Livelihood – our demanding jobs and their derivative priorities that are often posited as acceptable justifications for apathy towards the surrounding nature. We have no time to care for ourselves and our society, so evidently, we do not care about our environment. However, a 40-year old a cab driver at Kolkata has strived to lead an eco-friendly way of life quite early in his life.

Dhananjay Chakraborty, a nature-lover has turned the space of his livelihood into a reflection of his life by transforming his taxi cab into a green-ride vaahan! Starting from the drops of taking care of plants, Dhananjay’s life has turned into a forest of green methods by the time he reached mid-life. He metamorphized his cab into a ‘Subuj Rath’ (green chariot), an ideal vehicle to highlight the needs of our nature – to plant trees, using plants as air purifier within the cab and distribution of leaflets with environmental messages. In this world of mass-produced beliefs, Dhananjay has managed to pick up a lifestyle that has synced with his experience of nature the most and actualized it in his life.

The Embryonic Idea to the Green Baby

Bapi-GreenTaxi-4

Dhananjay rides his cab between Karunamoyee and Tollygunge in Kolkata. The idea of ‘Subuj Rath’ was born in 2012 when his wife Sharita placed a money-plant (devil’s ivy) on the taxi-top. Watching it grow into a beautiful plant, inspired Dhananjay to start a green garden on the car’s rooftop.

Dhananjay Chakraborty’s Subuj Rath was initiated onto the roads of Kolkata on 8 May 2015 and it took over 5 months for completion. Dhananjay spent Rs 22,000 for installing a rooftop garden that contains a bed of stone chips, soil and sand that supports lush Bermuda grass. The total amount of money spent on turning his Ambassador car into a green chariot was Rs 55,000.

The car’s ceiling is made from artificial glass, adding to the organic index of the vehicle. Weighing about 65kgs, it adds to the amount of fuel used during travel. His love for nature travels in his cab- tangibly measuring 65kgs and when asked if the extra cost incurred does not worry him, he simply says, ‘I do not mind it’. There are also eight potted plants in the trunk. A “yes” to everyone who asserts that a change to green life would be costly and a “no” to those who make this a reason for not living a green life!

Bapi-GreenTaxi-00

Kusalakarma – The Wholesome Awareness

Following a holistic method of spreading awareness on leading a healthy life, the car seats are shaded yellow with painted appeals to passengers to stop smoking and alcohol consumption. One message reads: “Thaake jodi Cancer er bhoy, Dhumrapaan aar noy!” (If cancer frightens you, then drop the tobacco now!). Non-violence, the seed of green life branches off into illustrations in the cab- the image of Ganges and pigeon alongside kukri (Nepali knife) of short poems.

Unapologetically Green

When Bonani Kakkar, an environmental activist was informed about Dhananjay and his green chariot, she remarked, “He seems to be a crazy person but maybe our society needs more crazy people like him.” Holding a tribute to those misfits and geniuses who transform our lives, Dhananjay Chakraborty stands as a torch-bearer of green life to ‘The Common Man’.

America’s Most Unique Destinations

0

The United States of America is a very large country not only in terms of population but in terms of area. While people in the international community might primarily recognize a few places in particular – New York, Washington, D.C., and Hollywood, perhaps – the truth is that there’s a stunning variety of different places and types of places to visit. Because of this, we wanted to look into some of the most unique options.

Kauai, Hawaii

Kauai

It’s well-known that Hawaii is unlike the rest of the U.S. – a legitimate paradise of islands, more akin to the famous destinations of the South Pacific than the mainland U.S., at least in visual appeal. And of the Hawaiian islands, Kauai (sometimes written Kaua’i) is the most striking. Indeed, some argue that it’s the best overall as well, on the grounds that it has legendary sunsets, wonderful hiking and watersport activities, and generally stands for much of what makes Hawaii famous. Essentially, it’s the most noteworthy island in what many would call the most beautiful state in America – a visual treat on par with any other in the world.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah

There’s a concept known as “southern charm” in the United States, which essentially speaks to the friendly, communal atmosphere and hospitality of some of the communities in the southern states. Savannah, Georgia is an old town that in some ways exemplifies this atmosphere even if many other southern communities sometimes fall short of it. And on top of that, it’s also got a palpable sense of history to it, emanating from everything from the majestic Southern Live Oak trees dotted around the city, to the horse-drawn carriages you’ll see on occasion, to the guided ghost tours of old buildings and neighborhoods. It’s an intoxicating and culturally rich destination, not to mention a place where the weather is good almost all year round.

Steamboat Springs, Colorado

SteamboatSprings

There are a lot of spectacular ski towns in the U.S., primarily along the extensive Rocky Mountain range in the western part of the country. Most of them make for excellent donations, but Steamboat Springs in Colorado may be the most unique. This is because it’s a world-class ski spot, nearly on a level with some destinations in the European Alps, yet it doesn’t tend to have some of the massive crowds you’ll find in other famous spots like Vail, Park City, or Lake Tahoe. This, combined with the fact that there are very real hot springs for which the area is named, make it quite special even among the top ski destinations in the U.S.

Las Vegas, Nevada

LasvegasNV

Las Vegas has long been known as the primary gambling destination in the U.S., and there’s a chance that it may actually become less unique in this regard. Sports betting is currently being legalized in many more states, and there’s every chance casino gaming will follow. Meanwhile, Nevada itself is also considering accepting wagers from outside the state, which could decrease the need for people to actually go there. For now though, Vegas remains an unrivaled entertainment city, built on casinos but featuring so much more. Live performances, sporting events and concerts, five-star restaurants, casinos, spas, shops, bars, clubs, pools…. It’s all there, in decadent abundance, and beneath millions of flashing lights. There really isn’t a place like it in the world.

Portland, Oregon

PortlandOregon

It’s a little bit harder to describe Portland’s uniqueness, or to define it with any single feature. It is essentially just a very pleasant city, embodying the spirit of the Pacific Northwest region and in close proximity to gorgeous scenery. It’s also seen as a very progressive city however, as seen in everything from its having led the charge toward craft breweries that has since swept the U.S., to having an expansive layout of biking paths in order to persuade people to be environmentally responsible. There’s just a culture to the place that is unlike most of the rest of the country.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

SanJuanPR

Many don’t realize it, but Puerto Rico is very much a part of the U.S. – though it has not yet been granted statehood. Puerto Ricans are Americans, and in a sense this makes San Juan one of America’s most interesting cities. It is arguably the premier colonial city on the Caribbean islands, and that’s saying something. Remnants of historical occupation are among its most striking sights, and yet the city also has a vibrant modern culture, not to mention easy access to beautiful Caribbean beaches and inland forests. Some may be under the impression, from the international news, that traveling to Puerto Rico would be inadvisable given that it was largely devastated by a hurricane in 2017. However, for those interested, there are actually arguments that tourism can help, which in a way makes San Juan more appealing than ever!

Sakrebailu Elephant Camp – Preserving wildlife through ecotourism

1

Sakrebailu-elephant-camp

Hope you vaguely remember the Wildlife Week that is celebrated every October. The forest department makes an earnest attempt to highlight the need to protext wildlife and promote eco-tourism. However, due to the relentless onslaught of development, it is hard to find a wildlife sanctuary anywhere near the civilised world. During this year’s wildlife week, the Karnataka forest department has arranged an interesting event at the Sakrebailu Elephant Camp.

It is remarkable to see the forest department has finally understood the value of preserving wildlife as well as creating a sustainable eco-tourism activity. Indian environmentalists need to realize that nature can be preserved in a commercially beneficial manner! Sakrebailu Elephant Camp is one such eco-tourism destination that not only preserves wildlife, but also enables a sustainable eco-tourism activity.

Citizens of Shimoga (Shivamogga) are lucky enough to have an offbeat travel spot, which is not only interesting every time you visit but also endearing to people of all ages. Located 14kms away from the bustling city of Shimoga , the camp houses around 20 elephants that have been tamed and accustomed to human habitat. While the large tuskers create awe among visitors, the baby elephants steal the show through their naughty behaviour. We have visited the Sakrebailu Elephant Camp atleast 3 times over the last decade, but it is refreshing to watch these wild animals every time we visit.

Get yourself garlanded by the gentle giant for a few rupees!

A Weekend in Silvassa

A Weekend in Silvassa
Silvassa – Ashish Gupta via Flickr

Silvassa, the capital city of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, is a popular weekend getaway for most travelers around southern parts of Gujarat. But that doesn’t mean people like me, who live in Ahmedabad don’t visit the place often. It is one of my family’s favorite destinations, when we need a quick break from city life, or if there’s a long weekend without much to do. So a few weeks ago, a few of my cousins and I planned a weekend retreat in this beautiful town, sandwiched between the edges of Maharashtra and Gujarat. We had undertaken short treks to Silvassa and around, but never to just roam around, like a typical tourist. On this trip, we changed that routine and explored Silvassa like a tourist. We availed of the best and most reliable Ahmedabad taxi service for the entire trip, including travel. It was quite reasonable and the cabbie was also a nice guy who helped us explore the place better.

Silvassa Through the Eyes of a Tourist

A Weekend in Silvassa
Vanganga Garden, Silvassa – Ashish Gupta via Flickr

The Indo-Portuguese town is perhaps the only remaining traces of Portuguese history in Gujarat. The place derived its name from the Portuguese word ‘silva’ which means ‘wood’ and with its ample wooded areas, (probably more in those days), the moniker made sense. Most of the crowd we found at the resort we stayed at, were weekend travelers from neighboring cities, like us, and a few tourists who were exploring the place for the first time. There was not much to do at the resort, except drink and be merry.

Despite recent industrial intervention and rampant modern constructions, the town has managed to preserve its heritage in its architectural splendors like the church of Our Lady of Piety. The early 19th-century church is definitely a must-visit attraction, and we wondered why and how we missed it earlier. The beautiful archways and the serene ambiance made it more exquisite to roam around or take a moment to sit and absorb the peace.

Silvassa Tribal Museum

A Weekend in Silvassa
Silvassa Tribal Museum – RameshSharma1 via Flickr

The town has a rich history of Indo-Portuguese culture, and all of it is preserved at the Silvassa Tribal Museum. And if you are visiting Silvassa for the first time, definitely check this off from your ‘must-see’ list. Although not too expansive, the museum housed prominent instances and antique collections from the days of Portuguese rule. It sat right at the center of the city, so people can easily access it from any corner. There were hunting weapons, jewelry, fare from ancient merchants, and many utility items the locals used in those days. There were also wax models of daily life scenes of tribal villages and the influence of foreign rule. One of the sets that caught my attention was the exorcism of a village woman, which seemed to be a common practice (and shockingly it still is many parts of the country). The museum will also expose you to the local tribal community, who once occupied this town in large numbers. Now, most of them have adapted to the modern, urban life, moved on to become a part of the mainstream population. It didn’t take too long to explore the small museum, but I was fascinated by the collection of old photographs, paintings, and a lot of artifacts.

The Greener Patches

One of the things, which I had noticed in my earlier trips as well, was the dedication to beautifying the city with gardens and natural enclaves. Take the Hirwa Van Gardens for instance. The lush greenery, surrounded by roaring waterfalls make for a lovely spot for a picnic, or for solo travelers to sit and read or take a walk through the wooded areas. Then there is Dudhni Lake. It is a little outside the town, at about a 40Km drive. It is a huge lake, but more like a tourist-oriented community with small resorts and boating options. We took a boat ride and could feel the fresh monsoon air filling our sore city lungs.

A day of Safari

A Weekend in Silvassa
Image – Ashish Gupta via Flickr

The entire state of Gujarat is rich in wildlife, and no matter where you go, you will find something that would intrigue you. While Silvassa is no Gir Forest, it still stands proud with its lion habitat at the Vasona forests. It is no sanctuary or an open zoo, but a raw, untended patch of forested lands, where you can spot lions roaming free in the wild. This was our next day’s agenda. Thankfully, we had managed to get a car on rent in Ahmedabad with an experienced driver so we could easily tour the area without much ado. Also, our cabbie knew where to spot the wild cats. There are also safari tours in Jeep/Tempo Traveler, depending on what you opt for. We spotted three lions, who seemed more scared than we should have been.

And thus, our weekend came to a quick end. Who would have thought that a place we had frequented so many times earlier will present itself in a completely new way if only we change our agenda!

Why we should ethically choose vegetarianism?

Vegetarianism-2

Today, we celebrate the birth of a non-violent way of life, symbolized by the coming to our world of M.K. Gandhi. Considered as the father of the nation, his doctrine of non-violence steered the mode in which the British government was eventually overthrown. Gandhi talks about the type of relationship that should ideally exist between man and animals: mutual aid.

Us: Herbivores or Omnivores?

When it comes to vegetarianism, I am always faced with the primary question: What is it that human beings have naturally evolved to consume? Today, the answer is between herbivorous and omnivorous. A 2009 Huffington Post piece on human evolution talks about how human beings are naturally vegetarians. Stripping away any bias one might have because of being an animal rights activist, the safest reply would be to say that we are omnivores. Our ability to eat plants and animals arose as an evolutionary asset to increase our chances of survival in a wide range of geographical conditions.

Fixing the Food Chain: Not Linear but Interdependent Matrix

The school-book notion of food chain is a linear movement: the grass to grasshopper, to the frog, to the snake, to the hawk and so on. However, a deeper understanding of ecology reveals that there is not a linear but an interdependent web of food chain.

Vegetarianism-3

The ecosystem comprises of a series of inter-related connections between the different living and non-living things. Such an understanding will keep away objections which point out that- “If I do not eat chicken, then their population would increase exponentially.” or “What would happen of the prey if we don’t eat the predator (chicken or cow or goat)?”. In eating any particular animal, we are not only dealing with a prey-predator relationship but a matrix of relationships in which the animal is embedded.

Ethic of Eating Animals

Today, it is scientifically proven that animals can suffer. They are conscious beings who have complex nervous systems that exhibit structures of pain and suffering. The reasons mentioned for why one should ethically choose vegetarianism are:

  • Growing scientific research shows that it is possible for the human body to live healthily on plant-based balanced diet. Provided this is the case, then would you choose to eat living beings for the pleasure of your sense organs alone?
  • Pragmatically, the amount of money spent on livestock industry- the growth and maintenance of the slaughter houses and farms leads to repercussions which far outweigh the transient pleasure a person gets from eating of the meat. Animal agriculture has been found to be the leading cause of species extinction, water pollution, ocean dead zones, and habitat destruction.
  • For those who believe that the eating of animals is only for its nutritional value and not solely the sensual pleasure will have to face the question: Would you eat human beings who have equal mental capacities as animals which we generally consume?

Arguments against vegetarianism also posit the suffering of plants to hint at the hypocrisy of vegetarians. However, the point remains: even if plants do suffer and we move towards a type of living where we cause minimal pain, would it be justified to eat animals? Regardless of plants suffering or not suffering, the case of animal suffering stands.

Coupling together yet another Gandhian doctrine, “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” (to counter the argument, “What will happen if only I do it?”), we drop the ball in your lap: What do you think? Do you eat animals and why?
