Perpetual Drift: Bhuwal Prasad’s Solo Exhibition Opens at Travancore Palace, New Delhi

Eikowa Contemporary will present Perpetual Drift, a solo exhibition by artist Bhuwal Prasad, at Travancore Palace in New Delhi from 27 to 30 September 2026. The exhibition will feature a selection of the artist’s recent paintings, 3D paintings and sculptures, bringing together key aspects of his evolving artistic practice. A preview will be held on 26 September from 6 PM to 9 PM.

Exploring a Neo-Urbanist Vision

At the centre of Perpetual Drift is Prasad’s concept of Neo-Urbanism, a visual and conceptual framework that imagines contemporary life reconnecting with nature. The exhibition considers how imagination, instinct and fantasy can exist outside the regulated and technology-driven structures that increasingly define urban environments. Through densely layered compositions, the artist proposes alternative ways of experiencing space and community.

A Language of Lines and Forms

Prasad’s works are recognised for their intricate line work, overlapping forms and immersive visual rhythms. At first glance, many of the compositions appear abstract, but closer observation reveals fragments of everyday urban life alongside references to animals, plants and inherited cultural traditions. His paintings encourage viewers to move physically through the space and engage with the works from different distances and perspectives.

Influences from Folk, Tribal and Urban Cultures

The exhibition highlights the artist’s distinctive synthesis of postmodern graffiti aesthetics with folk and tribal visual traditions. Born in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, in 1987, Prasad studied at Banaras Hindu University and later completed postgraduate studies at the College of Art, Delhi. His practice draws from diverse sources, including tribal art forms, prehistoric imagery and contemporary urban culture. These influences have contributed to a visual language that merges abstraction with narrative elements.

Mapping the Urban Imagination

Many of the works in Perpetual Drift take inspiration from overlooked corners of cities, including alleyways, graffiti surfaces and unconventional typography. Rather than depicting literal cityscapes, Prasad creates layered visual environments that resemble psychological maps. Within these compositions, forms and colours continuously interact, suggesting the complexity of memory, movement and perception.

A recurring feature of Prasad’s work is the use of paired relationships and binaries, including human and animal, male and female, and flying and crawling forms. The artist’s approach resonates with ideas associated with animism and Shintoism, where living beings are viewed as part of a broader ecological and spiritual network.

Eikowa Contemporary’s Curatorial Approach

Presented by Eikowa Contemporary, the exhibition reflects the gallery’s ongoing focus on contemporary artistic practices from the Indian subcontinent. Founded in 2024, the gallery works with emerging and established artists while developing exhibitions that engage with contemporary social and cultural concerns.

Prasad has previously exhibited in solo and group exhibitions across India, including Between the Line and Solitude in my Cacophony. His work has gained recognition for combining abstract visual structures with references to folklore, memory and collective experience.
