Uttarayana From the Eyes of a Delhite

Uttarayana

All through my life, I have seen people of a particular neighbourhood gathering around a crackling holy flame, offering their prayers as a part of Lohri celebrations. A pleasant warmth amidst the chill of a January night.  And almost each year, the following morning would bring Makar Sankranti.

Culturally speaking, Lohri and Makar Sankranti are amongst the festivals that celebrate the hard work of farmers and the onset of harvest season. Although for me, they often came and left quick unlike Diwali, Dussehra and Holi.

My perception flew out the window the moment I landed in Vadodara, just a day prior to Uttarayana. It gave me a glimpse of some of the frenzy revolving around the kite festival. My eyes widened in awe as they fell upon a bustling market, throbbing with colours.

Uttarayana-Kites

Stacks of patang (kites) stood bundled up in corners. The finest pieces dangled from the edge of makeshift shops. Huddled around them were kids and youngsters, their eyes gleaming almost impatiently as they darted between kites to gather their best picks.
Dark pink manjha (glass glossed string with which the kites are flown) rolled around wooden spools decorated the table alongside hued plastic trumpet toys of varying sizes.
The momentum on crowded streets spoke of months of slogging, battered pink fingers and smiling faces of kids accompanying their parents in attracting potential customers. Their high-pitched voices excitedly rattled off on, “how their kites would stand out from the rest.”

Staying with a relative in Vadodara and entering their mohalla (neighbourhood) lanes, felt quite cosy. We were greeted warmly while passing different houses. Familiarisation started settling in me from that moment on. The next morning, I woke up to the musical sounds, it was the day of Uttarayana. My day started with a hearty meal of mouth-watering Gujarati dishes, Jalebi Fafda, Muthiya, Khaman and Dhokla. Loud cheers and gibberish lingered on in the background intermitted with Bollywood music flashing the memories of Holi. Excitement and restlessness coursed through me to take a look at the happenings on the roofs.

Uttarayana-festival-Food-02

And when I finally did, I gasped. The sky was dotted in colours. Some of them flying away, many chasing down others and far off the distance, several gliding through the breeze to unknown destinations.

There were hardly any edifices. Independent houses stretched far into the horizon. Roofs were occupied with people grasping thread, manoeuvring it hurriedly to fly their kites, spool holding fellows remained closely behind them. “Khainch!” “Lapet!” Someone yelled across loudly after skilfully cutting down his opponent’s thread and along grew the sound of victory trumpets. It felt like the anthem of the day, ringing in from all ends. Shortly thereafter, their merriment rubbed off on us as well. We cheered on, shared laughs and tried our hand at kite flying while munching on chikki and sukhdi. It felt like sitting in one large stadium.

Uttarayana-Kite-Flying

The novelty of Makar Sankranti kept me engrossed so much that I didn’t even realise when the sky turned crimson. Several twinkling beads started passing by. It was the time for lamps and fireworks.
There is something about giving a final nudge to a warm lamp into the sky as if sending away some of your hopes to those who listen. And the higher they rose, jiggling with the evening breeze, the calmer it felt.

I was momentarily transfixed by the beauty of fireworks casting patterns in the darkness and hundreds of lamps effortlessly gliding forward in between their artwork. It truly felt like an offbeat experience when the loudness of the day transitioned into a peaceful dreamy night. Most of us had our eyes glued to the sky.
Makar Sankranti held a unique peace-inducing memory in my mind. It was synonymous with sesame seeds infused sweet treats, early morning sesame seeds water bath and offering up of prayers. By night, we would end our day with curd, coriander dip, papad and khichdi.

Uttarayana threw a new perspective my way in which the festivities were not limited to a particular household or neighbourhood as happen in many festivals. Strangers or not, everyone seemed to be collectively engaged in singing the same tune while interacting through their kites. They made me feel like a part of them. As a stranger to their state, the underlining force behind their thriving solidarity was very apparent to me. The twin festivals of Uttarayana and Navratri had a considerable role to play in community building.

Uttarayana-festival-Food

Cuisines too have often brought people closer especially for a food aficionado like myself who had a perfect wrap to an exhilarating day with a Gujarati thali (plate). We learnt that the signature dish of Uttarayana is Undhiyun, a gourmet of veggies and spices, topped with Sev. The rest of the evening took off blissfully with us treating our taste buds to Undhiyun and other delicacies from our plate!

What do Films like Chhapaak Contribute to the Society?

It happens but rarely that the Indian movie industry creates a film that unabashedly deals with sensitive issues, and forces the audience to ponder on the same by making them uncomfortable. Fewer films still have had the ability to make a lasting impact, one that not only forces the viewers to question the issues raised but actually bring about positive change. In recent times, despite the negative publicity surrounding the movie Chhapaak owing to unprecedented political involvement, this film has been able to achieve just what it set out for. The Deepika Padukone starrer is based on true events surrounding the acid attack survivor Lakshmi Agarwal. Meghna Gulzar leaves little to the imagination, choosing to delve headlong into the brutalities of acid attack and its aftermath, depicting the reality in a stark manner. Not only does the movie travel back in time to recreate the crime, it touches upon all the matters pertaining to acid violence – women’s safety, failure of governmental laws for protection, and the life of the victim after recovery.

Source – Lakshmi Agarwal FB Page

The drive for making people aware of the magnitude of acid violence began as a promotional move for the film. Officials on set were chosen to conduct social experiments with hidden cameras to record the actuality of the problem, such as Deepika herself who went out in public with her make up as Lakshmi Agarwal on. This was done to compare and bring to light the reactions of the people who noticed her, and the degree of insensitivity which is usually meted out to acid violence survivors. Another such experiment was conducted in which numerous people were followed to capture their movements as they tried to illegally buy acid. In this way, attention was drawn to the ease of openly purchasing acid and the shopkeepers who sold them, often without a license or demanding any sort of ID from the customer.

What came as a culmination to these efforts to raise awareness were various governmental acts in the interest of the protection of the rights of acid attack victims. In recent times, the Haryana government has implemented a scheme under which a monthly pension ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 9,000 is being provided to acid attack victims. This is done on the basis of the degree of injuries and physical disability to ensure a steady source of income for the victims. Apart from this, the Women and Child Development Department is said to provide financial aid ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 3 lakhs to such women for undergoing medical treatment. Inspired by this film, the Uttarakhand government has proposed to introduce a pension scheme for such victims in the state to help them lead an independent life. On record there are yet very few acid attack survivors in the state of Uttarakhand government, and they also plan on devising methods to reach out to all such victims by identifying them.

Stop sale of acid
Source – Lakshmi Agarwal FB Page

The movie Chhapaak follows the events surrounding Agarwal’s move to file a PIL in the Supreme Court to ban over-the-counter sale of acid, and her win resulting in a historical judgement. Through relevant social experiments the cast and crew of the film have tried to record the illegal sale and the ease of acquiring acid in order to highlight the gravity of the situation. Acid attack cases have not reduced but in fact have been increasing, according to crime records, even after the imposition of a ban upon its sale. By interacting with actual victims and survivors, bringing them onto the silver screen and daring to share their traumatic experiences, Meghna Gulzar exposes a kind of life and world that has mainly hitherto been left in the dark.

This has shown the path to only the beginning of a revolution in terms of arrangements and opportunities of income for acid attack victims, and there is yet a long way to go before the government recognizes this as a pertinent problem and draws up solutions. However, it is the start of such a conversation which is important for the change to eventually break through the system of privileged ignorance. It is apparent that movies and TV shows of such natures have immense potential for spreading awareness and eventually bringing about necessary change. In the past as well, certain films have proved to be the start of widespread revolutions for social causes. Hence movies like Chhapaak, which may not have mass appeal and thus may lose out on box office success, are incredibly important to produce, which should not be slighted by other unrelated issues which might be involved.

How To Better Involve Adventure In Your Life

Adventure In Your Life

Is your life getting a little staid? Do you sometimes bore yourself? Maybe it’s time to add some adventure into your life. Deciding how and where to expand your horizons doesn’t have to involve making a monumental change. Sometimes it’s just about deciding to do one thing differently.

Travel

There are all kinds of adventure travel tours available for those wanting to bike ride across four countries or rock climb your way to a beautiful view; however, adding adventure to your life does not mean that you have to risk spraining your ankle. Adventure can mean simply going someplace you’ve never been or choosing a mode of transportation you’ve never tried. Some people swear by getting to their chosen destination by riding a train overnight. Others love the flexibility of a repositioning cruise that leaves you in a different place from where you started. It’s essentially like getting two adventures in one. You can enjoy all the good things a cruise has to offer and combine it with an extensive exploration of your final port before you travel back home.

Physical Activity

If you have been promising yourself to get fit or exercise more, maybe it’s time to look beyond the standard “join a gym and never go” routine. Some churches and community organizations offer adult leagues in volleyball, soccer, bowling, softball, and many other sports. Joining a group is an adventure. You have the potential to make new friends and to get more active. As a bonus, there will probably be a happy hour after the game whether you win or lose. Plus, if adult kickball isn’t for you, you’re not locked into a contract.

Food

It’s not hard to enjoy good food. In fact, it’s hard not to enjoy it. Becoming a real foodie and expanding your palate can be a true adventure. There are often informal foodie classes offered at local restaurants, junior colleges or cooking schools (if you live in a big enough city). In addition, many restaurants offer wine and food pairing specials that provide a set menu plus explanation of why and how each wine enhances the flavor of each dish. Keep your eyes open for bars that offer whiskey tastings also. If you prefer a more low-key approach to adventure, make a list of every ethnic restaurant type in your city and make a date with a friend to try a new one out every couple of weeks. Keep a list of your newly discovered food and drink “likes” so that you can always refer back to your journey of discovery if life threatens to get boring again.

Hobbies

Another way to experience the world is to learn something new. Whether you’ve always wanted to learn to play the piano or to paint with watercolor, this is the time to step out and try it. The best part about taking up a hobby as an adult is that you can do it just for you without the pressure of having to perform or to be perfect. You can learn to knit or sail or whittle because it sounds interesting. You’ll meet other people in your class with the same interest and have something to talk about outside of class other than what you watched on TV the day before.

Finally, if you’re an introvert, improving your personal skills is a huge adventure and a worthwhile one. Taking a class in making small talk or giving speeches may sound silly on the surface, but both are real life skills that not everyone possesses. If you find it’s easier to stay inside with the curtains drawn rather than go out into the world, a class in social etiquette may be the perfect segue into your more adventurous life. You’ll learn how to talk to others, and you’ll feel more confident in telling stories about your escapades whether they be an adult dodgeball league or world cruise.

5 Beginner Tips for Learning DevOps Programming

IT Training

Today, every IT professional is aware of DevOps engineering and most of them must have enough idea about what DevOps is, it’s basic tools, culture and how organizations can accelerate their application development life cycle using DevOps approach.

So, if you are planning to learn DevOps from some IT training institutes in Bangalore, we are sharing a few tips that will help you to learn DevOps programming.

Let’s start by discussing what exactly the DevOps is.

What is DevOps?

DevOps is an alignment of application development and operations together with better collaboration and communication.

In other words, DevOps is the culture which encourages alliances between IT development and operations team to provide faster deployment to the production environment. It helps to provide a faster release and increases the speed of business to deliver their products and services. The DevOps approach allows businesses to serve their clients in a better way and let them compete strongly in the market.

Why is DevOps Needed?

Before DevOps came into existence, the development and operation teams were used to work completely isolated.

Development, testing, and deployment were isolated activities being performed by different teams. Hence it caused an increased period of the software development life cycle.

In the conventional deployment process, the team members were spending huge time in designing, developing, testing, deploying, and monitoring the project rather than building the project.

Development and operation teams had their timelines, not synchronized with each other to avoid any further delays.

It gave rise to the demand for faster software delivery by businesses, which was not being fulfilled at that point of time. This was the reason DevOps came into the real-world, where development and operations were being handled simultaneously.

How to learn DevOps?

If you are new to DevOps, you may feel like you have come into another world. You think that you have learned everything about software development, testing, network security. But everything gets changed when it comes to DevOps. DevOps is not such an easy thing for beginners but if practiced correctly with guidance, time and patience, you will be a DevOps expert.

Below are the few tips you should follow, before going for DevOps training:

  1. A clear understanding of what a DevOps is

The very first thing you should focus on before learning DevOps programming is a clear understanding of DevOps processes. However, many professionals neglect this factor when choosing DevOps as a work role, later on, it becomes a problem for those. When you are chasing to pursue your career in the field of DevOps, it is essential to know absolutely what DevOps is and what it is not.

If you are starting your career in DevOps as a fresher, you must also take note of what will make you not eligible to move into the DevOps field. As DevOps is not an individual job role, it does not include using a specific set of methods, technologies to tools, but it is a cultural shift. DevOps introduces a cost-effective and productive approach in the field of software development.

  1. Know about basic DevOps culture

It is mandatory to understand the basic DevOps culture for the learner to be a perfect DevOps engineer. Technical skills like coding, Linux, scripting knowledge, development, and testing and deployment technologies are essential. The learner must also have a good understanding of cloud service platforms like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google cloud.

The DevOps team is responsible to integrate build and source code management tools and ensure continuous integration for testing. They should have a little idea about how to deploy and configure a test and production environment. Basic knowledge of programming language such as Java, Python, and knowledge of automation tools is also essential to become a successful DevOps engineer. The DevOps engineer should be willing to learn new technologies to adapt to face challenges.

  1. Search for the classes by professionals

Trying to learn DevOps on your own is nearly impossible. If you have the guidance of some professional and experienced trainers, that will be much value in the learning process. So, the student must enroll himself for a course that covers all fundamental practices of DevOps engineering or find anyone willing to teach the concepts of DevOps.

There are many IT training institutes in Bangalore, which provides DevOps training. All you need to do is to find the best DevOps training in Bangalore, who can help you to establish the fundamentals and core concepts of DevOps, which will put a good foundation for upcoming projects. Having someone to clarify your queries is invaluable. Responses and feedbacks from professional DevOps engineers will be most helpful while learning DevOps.

  1. Don’t skip any topic

DevOps is the combination of huge complex things. Just because you don’t understand any topic correctly, don’t skip that topic. If you want to clear all your concepts and understand that what exactly the particular tool is doing or how it is useful in the development process, you need to passionately engage yourself in the learning process.

Topics like security and code analysis are complex ones, so don’t skip them, instead of, take notes, do research on your own, and ask questions. DevOps engineering has a large community of developers, engineers, and project managers. Try to ask your questions on the blog, online forums. The guidance of experienced professionals will add value to your learning.

  1. Practice Regularly

When you are practicing on your own, at some point of time, you need to work with various tools and technologies you are learning. Explore the tools and try to follow the online tutorials to create small projects to implement the things that you are learning. Things may not work correctly for the first time, so try and try again. Don’t give up.

Initial setup is the longest and toughest part of the practice, but it is worth to do it. If you learn well to create, automate and manage your software, you have come so close to become the DevOps programmer.

From all of the above points, we can say that learning DevOps can be complicated and challenging but if you get a good instructor and proper guidance, things become much easier.

AC or Cooler: Which One Is Better And Why?

0

AC Or Cooler

With increasing temperature throughout the globe, over time people have had to come up with different strategies to cope with the changing situations. To battle, the heat people came up with two major solutions. One of these was the air conditioners and the other was the coolers. Now both of these have their own merits and demerits. They are also suitable for different places where the kind of heat they are to deal with is different. But what if you are planning to buy either of them and are confused as to which choice you are to make? We are here to tell you where the difference lies. All you need to do is read on.

Features of an AC

Here are some salient features of an air conditioner. Take a look before we go on further:

Not budget-friendly

Buying an air conditioner surely would not go easy on your pocket. The starting price of an air conditioner is around $40- $50, and that comes with the most nominal of the services that an air conditioner is meant to perform. However, you can sometimes get them on rent, such as in Ahmedabad, you can get AC on rent in Ahmedabad if you are looking for a temporary solution.

Uses a refrigerant and a chemical coolant:

An AC uses chemical coolants to condition the air around it. Even though it does cool the room temperature, it is equally hot when they are turned off.

Not portable:

Once you install your AC, it cannot be moved from there. It is not portable and uses up a lot of energy and power as well.

Convenient for both humid and dry areas:

An AC is useful in places where the climate is humid as well as in places where it is dry. This makes it a convenient option for people living in both places.

Features of an air cooler:

Here we have enlisted some features of an air cooler. Let’s take a look and see how it differs from an air conditioner.

Budget-friendly:

Air coolers unlike air conditioners are budget-friendly. They will go easy on your pockets. With about $40 or $50, you can get yourself a good air cooler with quite many features in it. You can also get them on rent. For instance, in places such as Ahmedabad, some places provide air cooler on rent in Ahmedabad at an affordable rate.

Water absorbent:

Air coolers reduce the heat in your room by making use of water-absorbent pads. They do not use any chemical substances to achieve the assigned work.

Portable:

This is probably the best part of having an air cooler. You can take it wherever you go and it is super easy to carry as well.

Convenient for dry areas:

Not that air coolers would not work in humid areas, but they work the best in dry areas. This is because of its use of water pads that in humid areas it is a not so convenient option.

We have now laid down the facts and features about both an AC and air cooler. AC has various drawbacks such as the money factor and is the use of chemical coolants. Air coolers on the other hand are quite pocket friendly and use water as a coolant. But if you are someone living in humid regions, then AC would be the better option to go for, while for dry areas, air coolers are always the way you must go.

Exploring the Heart and Soul of Alleppey

If you ask me to tell me the story about one of my most memorable travel experiences, I would most definitely, without a doubt, tell you about the time I went to “God’s Own Country” – Kerala. Where exactly in Kerala you ask? Alleppey.

While in Kerala, I was too tired arranging for train and bus tickets and I knew that I wanted to opt for something more comfortable and convenient. So, a few days before I left for Alleppy, I decided to book a convenient Alleppey taxi-service. After the booking was successful, I went on to explore a little more of Kochi for the next couple of days.

The Breathtaking Backwaters

House Boat Alleppey – sjdunphy vis Flickr

After exploring Kochi, it was time for me to leave for the much-awaited part of my journey – Alleppey. I booked a cab from Kochi to Alleppey and set out on my journey. I did not make many pit stops, apart from a tea break. The driving was smooth, the views serene and I was struggling to not doze off. Nevertheless, I kept awake and listened to a podcast instead. In about an hour to ninety minutes, I reached my destination.

Alleppy is famous for its backwaters and houseboats. You can’t visit Alleppey and not be on the backwaters. I had booked myself a houseboat through a travel agency online. For the next three hours, I was in heaven! The narrow canals, the palm trees and the coconut trees, the silence and serenity, the lagoons, everything looked like straight out of a picture! Only, it was reality, right in front of my eyes! Lunch was served on the houseboat itself. I had some karimeen, some rice, sambhar and some veggies! Everything was so fresh and tasty, I couldn’t stop myself from asking for a second helping!

After this memorable boat ride, I could fully comprehend the hype about Kerala and its backwaters! It’s something to experience at least once in your lifetime!

Exploring True Alleppey

After the houseboat, I made my way to the homestay where I was supposed to be staying in for the time I was there, and rested for an hour to rejuvenate my energy. I had some piping hot tea, and then, I made my way to Alappuzha Beach. It was almost evening by the time I was there. There were easily a hundred people on the beach, but I found myself a lonely spot, and watched the waves rise and fall for about an hour! No trip to any place can be complete without trying its street food. So, while on the beach, I tried some Kalukki Sherbat, Banana Fry and Shellfish. Everything was so cheap and authentic.

The next morning, I went to see the International Coir Museum in my cab. I love going to museums and learning about the art and culture of a particular place. In this particular museum, I learned how they make coir out of coconut trees. The number of handicrafts this coir is used in just blew my mind away! I also bought a few souvenirs for friends and family back home, from a shop there.

Ayurvedic Treatments and Putting an End to the Trip

Kerala and Alleppey, in particular, are famously known for their Ayurveda and Ayurvedic treatments. And I knew I had to get myself a good ayurvedic spa and massage once I am in Alleppy. So later that evening, I went to this Health and Wellness Centre where I had booked myself an appointment the previous day itself. The massage was too relaxing and I dozed off to sleep in a few minutes. After the ayurvedic spa, I felt muscles in my body I didn’t even know existed! I felt like a completely new person! I didn’t know I needed this so badly, until I did, and I have been recommending this to my friends ever since.

After the magical experience at the wellness centre, I went to the Alappuzha Zakariya Market. It had so many shops selling spices, handicrafts, coir items, fish and what not! I mostly strolled through it, and didn’t buy much, except for some authentic South Indian spices like the black pepper, for my mom and a few of my relatives.

I returned to my homestay, had some wholesome dinner, and went to bed. For days, I couldn’t stop thinking about the beautiful and refreshing time I had in those couple of days. I have been meaning to go visit the backwaters pretty soon!

Exploring Colonial Architecture in India – Part II

ReadA look at British Colonial Architecture in India – Part I

Though the British are often regarded as the main colonial powers in India, there are other European countries that have established their trade and cultural imprint on the Indian landscape. With a long coastline, India has over the years, been prone to docking of international trade merchant ships leading to a slow integration of their language, culture and architecture. Unlike the British colonization which is widespread across the subcontinent and also many a time engulfed in strong nationalism associated with the freedom struggle, the colonization by other European countries don’t adhere to much negativity.

This may be because the French, Portuguese and Dutch colonies concentrated their impact on regional areas. In some cases, their aim was not so much as ruling or casting control over these territories but was directed on the lines of economics, trade and religion. In other cases, where they did rule the territories there was not a disregard for the local culture and thinking. This is why the influence of the French, Portuguese and Dutch settlements on the respective areas is often seen as a seamless mix of both the local and outside cultures. Today, these regions exude a well balanced mix of festivals, cuisines and architectural wonders that define them and make them special from other parts of the country.

Portuguese Architecture in India

Portuguese-Architecture-in-India

The Portuguese landed in 1498 when Vasco de Gama docked ship at Calicut in Kerala. Jesuit Francisco Javier arrived about fifty years later to spread the catholic religious way and hence many of the early architecture of the Portuguese are manifested in churches, cathedrals and schools. Western India, especially Goa and Daman and Diu have seen the maximum influence of Portuguese colonization. Goa is in fact, where the Portuguese ruled for more than 400 years until in 1961 the Indian Armed Forces annexed the territory.

Portuguese-Architecture-in-India-01

Some of the Portuguese architecture today have emerged as leading tourist destinations of the state. Old Goa is home to a number of churches and cathedrals that have a distinct Portuguese style of architecture which corresponds to the architecture in its other colonies, such as, Africa, Brazil and Azores. The Basilica do Bom Jesus in Old Goa, with its three stories and baroque style reminds one of the late Renaissance architecture. The Cathedral de Santa Catarina is a mix of Tuscan and Corinthain styles and home to its big Golden Bell. Other religious structures that are heavily influenced with Portuguese style of building and were built during their reign include the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi, Convent of Santa Monica, Chapel of the Weeping Cross, Sanctuary of Saint Joseph Vaz and more. Various historical sites such as, Fort Aguada, Reis Magos Fort as well as, many Goan homes are structured on the Portuguese style of architecture. Colorful painted exteriors that could be seen by sailors from far, the Goan homes with their pillared porches, wrought iron balconies and inner courtyards were built mostly during the 18th century.

Aguada Beach Fort
Fort Aguada, Goa

Though the Portuguese style of architecture was predominant in Goa and Daman and Dui, sporadic influences can also be seen in other parts of the country, such as, the Bandel Church in West Bengal on the banks of the River Hoogly. In Mumbai, the Madh Fort, Castella de Aguada and St. John’s Baptist Church are structures that remain from the Portuguese colonial rule.

French Architecture in India

French Establishments in India or the French colonies in India came after the Dutch and English colonization and in some parts of India the influence of the French is seen till date. The establishments were seen in Pondicherry, Karikal, Yanaon on the Coromandel Coast, Mahe on the Malabar Coast and Chandernagor in West Bengal. The town of Changernagor is rich in French architectural history. The town was divided into the French Quarter and Indian Quarter and the difference between the two is evident till date. The French architecture made use of local raw materials and took into account the climatic conditions of the place, unlike the early British architecture. French shutter windows, carvings on archways and narrow street fronts were the French style; however, they were integrated with the courtyards and backyard gardens of a typical Bengali home.

French Architecture in Pondicherry India 01

The same can be said about Pondicherry too. The French architecture as well as culture is best witnessed in the Union Territory of Pondicherry which was under the French establishment for the longest time. With street boards both in Tamil and French, Pondicherry’s French Quarters also called the White Town is home to some of the most beautiful buildings painted in soft bright colors. It was almost 30years after the French first came to the country, that they acquired the area of what is Pondicherry today from a Tamil ruler. Though between the years 1693 to 1697 the Dutch took over, they handed the area back to the French East India Company.

Pondicherry is fraught with the French essence that is seen in many of its street names and its museum. Some of the most prominent French architecture structures in Pondicherry besides the homes include the French Institute and Consulate-General, French Palace today called the Government Square, the Romain Rolland Library and Notre Dame des Anges church. An integration of the Tamil and French architecture style can be seen in the Franco-Tamil style buildings and homes of Pondicherry.

The influence of the European colonial powers that made India their home over the years is seen in the architectural and historical references of the places that they ruled. Their influence though not seen across the entire nation is pocketed in distinct areas and resonates in sync with the culture and social fabric of these same areas. The French, Portuguese and Dutch influences have made a strong mark on the different regions and places of the country. However, their integrated presence with the local ambiance merits and explains their long lasting impact.

Tips to Bring Down Cost of Your Motorcycle Insurance

Bring Down Cost of Your Motorcycle Insurance

In India, a lot of people prefer riding the two-wheeler as it offers convenience. Most of the time, you are sure to reach a destination faster on a two-wheeler than on a four-wheeler.

The entire mobility sector is at the cusp of a major revolution that is majorly driven by changing consumer-preferences, growth of ride-sharing, and viability of EVs (electric vehicles). The implementation of the National Urban Transport Policy, National Policy on Biofuels, and National Electric Mobility Mission Plan will further bolster the EV market.

Whether you are riding an EV two-wheeler or a normal two-wheeler, there are some rules that apply to any type of two-wheeler. Once you buy a two-wheeler, it is necessary to get it insured. Every two-wheeler has to be insured against third-party liability. Having a third party liability motor insurance is compulsory in India.

Many two-wheeler owners also opt for added insurance, also called comprehensive change to package insurance so that the vehicle, driver and pillion get full coverage in case there is any untoward incident. However, the premium that you pay under comprehensive insurance is much more as you get more insurance coverage.

Traffic personnel have also become extremely strict and they levy a hefty fine in case the driver is not able to furnish the two-wheeler insurance documents. The entire process of choosing a good insurance policy that fetches good benefits has become easier as people can buy online motorcycle insurance from the comfort of their homes. Many people tend to commit mistakes when purchasing motorcycle insurance even after doing an online comparison and this mainly happens as they are either inexperienced to understand the benefits of third party liability motor insurance or they buy insurance in a hurry!

Below are some of the major reasons for expensive motorcycle insurance:

  • Non-satisfactory driving records – Some two-wheeler riders do not have a good driving history (or records) hence, the insurance company might charge more from you.
  • High-end two-wheeler – If you are willing to buy a high-end two-wheeler, you should also be ready to shell out more for the motor insurance.
  • Wrong selection of add-ons – Most of the insurance companies offer add-on cover that you can opt for on top of the basic insurance.

Now that you might be a bit aware of the factors that are responsible for a higher insurance premium, we have a look at some tips that can help you in reducing the costs associated with your motorcycle insurance:

  • Selection of the right coverage – The insurance policy that you select should depend on the driving pattern. If you are making regular use of the two-wheeler, you should choose a comprehensive insurance policy. On the other hand, if you are occasionally using the two-wheeler, you should choose third party liability motor insurance as it will help reduce the insurance costs and help you save extra bucks.
  • Comparison of different policies – With wider internet penetration, two-wheeler drivers are able to compare insurance providers and the various offerings that they have. Online motorcycle insurance is no longer an urban trend as people are getting more acquainted with the power of the internet.

Before buying online motorcycle insurance, you should always look for reviews of the insurance company and their customer service.

  • Focus on payment cycle – There are perks when you opt for an annual payment of insurance premium as most insurance companies offer discounts and perks for selecting annual premium payment over monthly premium payment.
  • Selection of right add-ons – In case you are opting for comprehensive insurance cover, you should also check the add-ons that you can opt for on top of the basic coverage. Assuming you are using the motorcycle regularly, you can choose add-ons such as roadside assistance coverage, personal accident cover, daily cash allowance cover, etc. Wisely choosing the add-ons will be beneficial in the long run.
  • Avoidance of small claims – NCB (No Claim Bonus) is a synonymous term in the insurance industry, whether it is healthcare insurance or motorcycle insurance. Insurance companies tend to pass on the benefits to their customers in case no claims are made by the policyholder during the entire year.

Many people take NCB benefits at the end of the year as the returns are more lucrative when compared to opting for smaller NCB benefits throughout the year.

  • Multi-year policy renewal – As you would have guessed from the name, here you have to pay for the insurance premium in advance. Instead of annual payment, you can choose a multi-year premium payment e.g. paying for three years in advance. Though you would be paying more money in one go, you get a good number of benefits.

The major benefit is that the vehicle is secured for three years. The other added benefit is that most insurance companies reward such customers and offer them hefty discounts. In some scenarios, the insurance company also waives off the annual hike on the premium.

You do an ample amount of research before short-listing a motorcycle. An equivalent amount of effort should also be spent on researching the insurance providers and the offerings they have under third party liability motor insurance or comprehensive insurance coverage.

Royal Sundaram General Insurance is a company that has a good reputation in the two-wheeler insurance segment. Comparing insurance policies and their offerings for motorcycle owners can be helpful in short-listing the best-suited policy for your vehicle!
