You can learn new languages from apps on your phone by practising every day. If everything goes well, maybe you can surprise your friends by showing off your newly acquired language in the vacations. You can even visit the country and interact with the natives in their language in the next summer vacation!

And what is a better time to explore new hobbies than summer vacations? You can look into new hobbies in the summer vacations and get better at them. Your hobbies can be anything like painting, writing, knitting or anything else that you enjoy doing.

Patalkot: Notes from the Underworld

I am always intrigued by our ancient folklores or the great tales from Indian mythology. They might not be true but there is something inviting about them, wanting me to seek the truth. If I could I would visit all these mythological sites mentioned in the ancient tales and experience for myself what they hold. Well, living a 21st-century life, I cannot possibly visit each and every place of such kind but I can definitely try to visit the ones that are within my reach and ability to traverse.

To Chhindwara

It was one-weekend last monsoon, or post-monsoon when I decided to explore Patalkot. For the ones unaware, this is the entrance to the world below. Or so they say in the tales. And even if you translate the name into English, it literally means “The Underworld”. Mythology also says that this land belongs to the demons and the serpents who rule their world and serve as guards to the underworld. They prevent the mere mortals from treading their territory unless of course, you are destined to hell. Sounds pretty gothic, right? So I had to see this with my own eyes and feel it on my skin to actually experience. Also, I should know if I am destined for hell or the heaven above (not that I believe in the same).

With millions of thoughts and questions running through my mind, I planned my travel. This mysterious (which I discovered later) is located in the Tamia district of Madhya Pradesh, close to Chhindwara. And as expected, there is no direct access to this place. Ergo, I booked my train till Indore. Thereafter, I booked a cheap taxi from Indore to Chhindwara. Now, Patalkot, of course, has no accommodation options, which I thankfully figured out before I went. So I booked the PWD guesthouse for a couple of days.

The adventure begins

Patalkot valley was nearly a two-hour drive from my guest house. I had hired a car in Indore from a top-rated vendor, which made my traveling around easier.

It was just after the monsoon, so the rains had retired and cleaned up the sky, but left a whole lot of greenery behind. This made the journey quite a scenic one. Madhya Pradesh is otherwise quite arid and rugged but the velvety foliage covered it all up.

Although the driver was experienced, the roads were tricky. There were no road signs or mile markers of any sort. While we treaded the challenging terrain, my driver started giving me a download of the place. These dense hills are home to more than 2000 tribes, all of whom live across 12 villages, all around the hills. The entire valley is spread over 20000 acres of land but without any commercial intervention. For ages, people have been living with the belief that this valley has deep, dark secrets with some zones completely inaccessible. However, people do come here for outdoor adventures like trekking, rock climbing etc. But I had no such agenda. All I wanted to do was to go around the hills and its forests, maybe head onto a less traveled trail and absorb the nature.

Soon, we were nearing the forested areas. For some strange reason, the road was empty. One more point to the spook quotient! The thick foliage and the surrounding mountains covered the road so much so that it felt like evening even at peak noon. In some places, the winding road narrowed and was still slippery from the rains. We reached the end of the road which was in front of a forest clearing. A faint ray of sunlight fell on the ground, almost like a sign from above. But isn’t it ironic, that the world above shows me a way to the underworld!

The Moment Between Worlds

I started walking past the large trees. It felt like I had gone back in time, maybe to the prehistoric era, or probably the only survivor after the apocalypse. Either way, it gave me mixed feelings. The musty smell of the damp forest and the excruciatingly loud silence felt menacing. I had probably reached the underworld, I thought. I must have walked for about half an hour or so when I reached a little further, the trail went downwards to a niche-like place surrounded by high rocky cliffs. There was a small pond-like water body in the center, probably caused by the rains. And since there is no way for sunlight to creep it, the pool never dried up. But this is all logical thinking, you see. Because somewhere on the back of my mind, I kept thinking if this actually is the portal to ‘the underworld’ everyone keeps talking about. And probably I had discovered the secret passage, which no one has.

A photographer by hobby, I love to document my experiences. But never before I had been so awestruck that I kept staring at my surrounding, without so much as taking the camera out of the bag. I just couldn’t move.

It was the blaring horns of my cab that got me out of the reverie. This trip was the ultimate proof of how fact is truly stranger than fiction.

Finjaan Tea – A Royal Tea Treat

3

types of tea

Have you ever enjoyed drinking tea in a royal way? Did you ever know that there are 36 varieties of tea? As a tea drinker, I have always relished all kinds of tea – the traditional milk tea, black tea, lime tea, green tea. However, I felt that this royal drink has been losing its pride of place due to the invasion of coffee cafes and the variety of coffee served in them. I was quite eager to see if there are any tea cafes and chai-bars. After we shifted to Hyderabad, my husband surprised me on my seventh wedding anniversary by taking me to a place called Finjaan.

Finjaan is a tea café where you can experience tea in an exotic royal manner. I was amazed to see such a beautiful tea café dedicated to tea drinking which is the first exclusive tea lounge in Hyderabad city. The credit should go to the tea lovers in Hyderabad who always knew the importance of tea in their daily lives. I had heard of Infinitea cafe and Cha Bar in Bangalore, but I had not visited them.

The ambiance of the Finjaan tea cafe smells and feels tea! The diversity in the tea varieties displayed at the reception table perplexed me! Rose tea, Jasmine tea, Jade ring tea, Chinese flower tea, Oolong tea, Rooibos tea, the list went on. Apart from them there were the Indian specialties such as Assam tea, Nilgiri tea and Darjeeling tea. The attendant enlightened us about all the different teas and their specialty.

 A Royal Tea Treat
The 36 varieties of tea in Finjaan

Each of these tea varieties had distinct taste and aroma and also had different effect on our body. We got to know that some of the Chinese varieties such as Oolong tea and Rooibos tea had amazing healing qualities. Tea is not only one of the preferred beverages in the world, but also a wonder drug with different antioxidants which heals us from different aliments.

The attendant made sure that we got an insight into the wonderful history of tea. Way back in 2737 BC, Shennong, a Chinese Emperor discovered tea when few leaves fell into the hot water that he was drinking in his garden. Today we are into Organic tea, Diet tea, Herbal Tea and Green Tea. Fruit and flower flavoured teas are also making their way into our lives.
Chinese Jade Ring Tea

We were the only people in the Finjaan tea cafe that day since it was quite early in the morning. The attendant said they usually have the crowds in the evening. Tea was served here only in the pure form without milk. Glancing the menu I realised that the cost of a simple black tea ranged from Rs50-170. I wondered do people spend so much money for just a black tea. The attendant reminded me that quality comes with a price! It’s about having tea in a royal way.

After juggling with too many choices, we finally chose to drink the Finjaan Chinese Flower Tea. It is a unique type of Chinese tea with a light to medium flavour and a strong aroma. It comes in two varieties – Flower tea and Scented tea. Flower tea uses dried flowers without much processing in their natural form, while Scented tea uses green and red teas as the base mixed with the scent of flowers.

Finjaan tea cafe has its own special range crockery for the tea preparation, in which tea is served to in its royal fashion. Watching the transparent tea kettle holding the golden brown tea brew was truly a delight! We could smell the pleasant aroma and as we started sipping it the taste was heavenly!

Coffee vs Tea – Take sides in Beverage War

1

[socialpoll id=”2305953″]

When the winter fog envelopes, when the chill gets to our bones,
Nothing beats a hot cup of … pardon me… is it tea or coffee?

How can you have such doubts… it is coffee obviously! It’s the drink the world wakes up to every morning, right?

Hello excuse me, it is tea! My parents and their grandparents have had tea all through their lives!

This coffee thing has just been around for the last decades. How can anyone even think of a competition to tea!?!

Are you bewildered by this silly argument about two dumb beverages?

Wars have been fought over these two beverages and countries identify their culture with them elevating them as their national drinks. so they can’t not dumb, right?

As a kid I used to hate both the beverages and kept away from them all through my college days. I was an outcast among friends since I didn’t join them for their morning ciggy and a cuppa. Then I joined a business magazine and they assigned to cover the growing café culture among youth. Just then the first India International Coffee Festival happened. Soon the Tea Board of India came out with geographical patents for Darjeeling Tea and made all efforts to promote tea as a youthful and energetic drink. So amidst the war of the beverages, I became a hapless victim!

The world today is divided among tea drinkers and coffee sippers. The British stick to Earl Gray while the Americans swear by their decaffeinated latte! North Indians are now turning to coffee, while Southies are learning to drink Green tea and Masala Chai! Really? Check this link!

Now, it’s time to take sides! It’s war out there and you don’t wanna be a hapless victim! Make your choice and fight for your drink in the battle of Coffee vs Tea.

Recycled Paper or Plastic? [Infographic]

4

bioplastic PapcornOur in-house environmental expert, Priyadharshini poses the million dollar question – should we recycle paper or plastic? She also suggests a better alternative for both! The other day, I dropped in at a café to have a cup of coffee. As I sipped my hot coffee, my eyes caught to a quote “Avoid plastics, Use paper bags”.

Most of us might have come across such environmental awareness quotes in public places, but I wondered have we ever given a second thought what lies behind that sentence?

In today’s modern world, the importance of environment is sought but uncared for. We blindly follow the alternatives for lesser impact on the environment. One such example is the usage of paper bags for plastic bags. Usage of plastic (polythene) carry bags has become inevitable. So paper bags have been suggested as an alternative. The word “paper” suggests that the paper bag is easily recyclable and that it is not as bad as plastic since it is biodegradable.

However, most paper cups and bags are coated with a plastic resin (i.e., polyethylene) for durability and convenience, therefore making both their composting and recycling difficult and raising the specter of carcinogenic chemical leaching. Depending on the forestry practices (and whether they are sustainably produced or not) paper bag production results in loss of trees, ecological degradation and a reduction in the planet’s carbon absorption capacity. In our world of shrinking forests and growing landfill, continued use of the paper bag is both dangerous and unsustainable.

When we compare the complete lifecycle analysis of paper or plastic bag, that is the ‘cradle to grave’ process which includes the impacts caused by a product right from its raw material extraction to its disposal, then we can clearly say which one is more sustainable. The sustainability of paper and plastic can be compared over their lifecycle, covering both energy and water footprints.

Bio-plastic fruit containers

Paper is produced from either tree barks or recycled paper. The production of paper consumes lots of water and beaching chemicals which produce toxic effluents harmful to the environment. On the other hand, the transportation of paper from the industry to consumer also consumes lots of fuel, creating a carbon footprint. In terms of recycling, paper can be only recycled 2-3 times due to its inflexibility and strength, and it again requires large amount of water for the process. Paper production consumes 935 times more water compared to plastic.

On the contrary, plastic is derived from crude oil residues and their carbon footprint for both the production and transportation is much lesser when compared to paper. The recycling of plastic is flexible and it can be done 5-10 times. So, in this background, we can now decide between paper and plastic based on our convenience and the recyclable capacity before its final disposal. Thankfully, advanced technology has brought in latest innovation which presents us a clever way out of the present problem.

Bio-plastics are derived from corn, sugarcane and other renewable biomass resources. These biodegradable thermoplastic material made from Polylactic Acid polymer are very much similar to the regular Polythene material. Corn-based plastic bags in particular have been gaining popularity in the West. Due to their natural origin and biodegradability characteristics, Bio-plastics can be converted into high-quality compost. Admittedly, there is much lesser carbon footprint from reusable Bio-plastic bags during their production and also from rinsing in hot water.

In India, are few companies have begun commercial production of Bio-plastics. Earthsoul India and Ravi Industries in Maharashtra, Harita NTI Ltd and Biotec Bags in Tamilnadu have been the pioneers in Bio-plastics. Now let’s hope consumer goods companies come forward to choose Bio-plastics and considerably reduce their carbon footprint and make their products more sustainable.

The Lone Rider

Wikipedia Deserves Respect

Wikipedia-logo

When was the last time you went to the nearest library to find information? Can’t remember…. When was the last time you searched for information online?

A few minutes ago?

All of us search for information everyday for different needs: students for their curricular subjects, housewives for recipes, market researchers for industry reports, journalists for background information. If we are searching for a definition or background information on a particular subject, most probably Google results will show Wikipedia entries on the top of the page and we all end up reading that entry.

I first read a Wikipedia page way back in 2002 during my first job as a newspaper correspondent. Since then, I have been totally in awe of this amazing model of user-contributed collaborative method of information collection and dissemination. I wondered how people, who otherwise do not share information among friends, can help build such a vast database!

Today, Wikipedia is ranked among the top ten global websites (Alexa) and has an estimated 365 million readers worldwide. Despite such popularity and regular usage by millions of people, I have constantly heard my friends complain about the reliability of user-collaborative information. However, none of these friends ever told me that they have stopped checking Wikipedia for information. Their standard refrain is there is no alternative!

Actually there are alternatives. Encyclopædia Britannica is a trustworthy source of information which was regularly used during our school days. Earlier, its website had a restricted access and all articles were updated once a year by a team of experts. Now after facing serious threat from Wikipedia, it is freely available and allows user submitted content as well. In fact, after 244 years of publication, the Encyclopaedia Britannica has stopped its print edition since 2012!

There are other sources of info: just search for “history of India”, and you will get a choice of links such as Indianchild.com, mapsofindia.com, About.com, and even BBC and CIA! However, you will find that there is no sign of Encyclopaedia Britannica in that Google search. Why? Simple, Google search engine ranks any website based on the content quality and visitor appeal. So the more visitors a website gets, the higher its ranking. So despite all the hue & cry about expert written and peer reviewed content, nobody seem to bother about Encyclopedia Britannica.

Despite all its usefulness and accuracy in information, Wikipedia has not gained respect among people. I wonder why? People rarely make an effort to check the ‘Talk’ page behind every Wiki page to see if there has been too many edits or any vandalism (now, where to find the ‘Talk’ page!). None of us ever make an effort to verify Wiki’s information with other websites and see if there is a bias or variation. None of us make an effort to create a Wiki page on a subject just to verify if anyone messes up the content.

Way back in 2005, Nature, a reputed scientific journal, compare Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica to find that the information accuracy and error levels are similar. So where does this distrust originate… Is it because we never trust anything created by a group of amateurs… Do we have the notion that only experts in a field should have a say in anything… Or is it because we feel if something is open to debate, it means it is debatable.

It strikes me that this distrust originates from somewhere deeper. Being open for debate is the fundamental difference between religion and science. Just because Isaac Newton gave the scientific law for motion and the ‘theory of mechanics’, it does not become the absolute universal truth. Another scientist like Einstein can disprove it by propounding another ‘theory of relativity’. However, in religion everything is constant and unquestionable!

Anyway, let me not digress into another debatable topic. Here is my appeal to readers – please do not question the veracity of Wikipedia in general. If you have doubts about a particular fact, please go to the ‘Discussion’ page and post a comment about it. Please make a contribution of at least Rs.1000 once in a year, since Wikipedia does not have any advertising revenue. By the way, I have never seen anyone complain about the absence of ads on Wikipedia! Please check Encyclopedia Britannica for a change!

Box item – Controversy about cash rich Wikipedia

At the end of every year, Wikipedia begins its fund raising campaign among its regular readers. In 2012, the website’s owner, Wikimedia Foundation raised $20 million from its 1 million donors. This year, it is all set to surpass that record, already receiving $25 million from 1.2 million donors! Evidently, Western media is abuzz with articles questioning why does a cash rich Wikipedia need more donations?!

Every voluntary organisation has the right to ask as much donations as it needs and every donor has the right to donate as much as he/she likes. In fact, the biggest donors for Wikipedia are large corporate foundations such as Ford Foundation and Google Foundation, who donated $3 million and $2 million respectively. If an enthusiastic fan like me wants to donate to Wikipedia, how can anyone question that?
Yes, I completely agree that Wikimedia Foundation does not spend much for Wikipedia’s administrative costs these days. It has found better use for its funds; check the list of recent initiatives below –

7 Additional Covers to Consider While Buying Car Insurance in 2019

Here’s a list of 7 additional covers to consider while buying a new car insurance policy in 2019.

Is 2019 the year of change for you? Is there a new car on your mind? Well, if you are planning to by a new car, you must also buy a new car insurance policy along with it. It is not only a mandatory requirement but a good financial security measure as well. Visit https://www.insurancenavy.com/cheap-car-insurance-california/ to get additional covers while buying car insurance in US. You have the option of going for the minimalistic Third-party Liability policy or the Comprehensive plan that offers extensive coverage. While going for a Comprehensive plan, you can also pick and choose certain Add-ons to enhance your coverage. Here’s a list of 7 additional covers to consider while buying a new car insurance policy in 2019.

Zero Depreciation

Insurers factor in the car’s depreciated value while settling claims. Depreciation is nothing but reduction in the value of an asset due to natural wear and tear. A car is a depreciating asset and thus, insurance companies reduce the depreciated value while settling claims. But you have the option of negating that by going for a Zero Depreciation cover. With this Add-on, car insurance companies will not deduct the depreciation value of a car while settling claims.

Roadside Assistance

It can be stressful if your car breaks down in the middle of a journey in an unfamiliar or a remote area. What will you do? Whom will you call? With a Roadside Assistance Add-on, there’s no need to panic. A single phone call to your insurance company will suffice to take care of the situation. They will send a mechanic to the site or arrange for a towing vehicle to take the car to the nearby garage.

NCB Protect

Car insurance companies offer something called a No Claim Bonus (NCB) to those who do not raise a claim during the previous policy period. This discount can go up to 50%, making NCB extremely lucrative. However, if you raise a claim, this NCB will reset to zero. Wouldn’t it be great if you had the liberty of raising a claim as well as retaining the NCB? This is exactly what you can do with the NCB protect Add-on. You can raise a claim or two (depends upon the terms and conditions) during a policy period without affecting your accumulated NCB.

Engine Protection Cover

You need to take adequate measures to cover the most important part of your car, its engine. Damage to the car’s engine is not covered under a basic Comprehensive plan. However, you can go for an Engine Protection Add-on to do the same. This Add-on is highly recommended for those residing in flood-prone areas.

Passenger Cover

When you buy a car insurance online or offline, normally you get a Personal Accident cover of Rs. 15 lakhs along with it. This means if you are injured during a car accident, the insurer will take care of your hospital expenses up to Rs. 15 lakhs. You can opt for a similar cover for the passengers who mostly travel with you in your car by going for a Passenger Cover Add-on.

Accessories Cover

You can insure additional accessories with the help of this cover. A basic policy only covers company-fitted accessories not the extra-fitted ones.

Beyond standard aftermarket accessories like upgraded sound systems or custom wheels, many vehicle owners invest in personalization features such as private plates, alloy wheel upgrades, or enhanced security systems. These additions can significantly increase your vehicle’s value but often fall outside the scope of basic insurance coverage. By extending your Accessories Cover to include these personalized elements, you ensure comprehensive protection for all the enhancements that make your vehicle uniquely yours, safeguarding your full investment rather than just the factory-standard components.

Personal Belonging Add-ons

Many people travel in their car with their expensive gadgets such as laptops and mobile phones. With this Add-on, you can insure your Personal Belongings that can get damaged while travelling in the insured car.

Buy Car Insurance Online

You can buy car insurance online in a matter of minutes. To buy car insurance online, all you have to do is visit your preferred insurer’s website, fill details, select a plan, choose Add-on covers, make the payment, and download your policy. Yes, buying car insurance online is that convenient! Remember to buy car insurance online from official websites of insurance companies to avoid any security issues.

10 Things You will Witness at the Kerala Boat Race

I have heard my family talk about the traditional Kerala boat race ever since I was a child. With great excitement they discuss the race and watch the entire race on television. Post this there is an extensive review of the same and a long list of could-have-been scenarios. I had never shown much interest in the details or the event itself.

I never imagined that I would be fascinated by this grand spectacle, and obviously, I was wrong. My resistance shattered to miniscule bits when I saw the race for the first time.

I am now convinced that you can resist being excited by the snake boat race only until the day you really see it. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was fascinated by it when he first saw the race in 1952 and from that day the list of converts only seem to endlessly multiply. The Nehru boat race, Kerala’s amazing race, is the most colourful water sport in India.

This annual event held at Alleppey on the Punnamada lake takes place on the 2nd Saturday of every August. It attracts thousands of people from across the world and is the biggest competition in this part of the country. Tourists and locals equally bubbling with enthusiasm give this city its festive look. Men and women with obviously large cameras photograph everything from spices to tea shops as they prepare for the mega event. So what really do they come to see? Well, here is a glimpse of the extra ordinary.

10 things you will witness at the Kerala boat race, Alleppey

1. The Snake Boats (Chundan Vallams)

Kerala-Boat-Race

The back waters and the snake boats. And of course, the race. The snake boats, also called the ‘chundan vallams’ form a major part of the visual treat. They are impressive, have a mighty pointed prow, are 100 feet long and can accommodate the team of rowers of up to 110 members. By the way, the snake boat is considered to be “the longest water vessel used for sports purpose”.

2. Super Essential: Some Serious Rowing.

Needless to say, in a boat race, the oar is mightier than the sword (and most certainly mightier than the pen!).

Kerala-Boat-Race3AA

3. A Sea of People with Multitude of Colours

A battle for the best seats in the gallery is an early indication that the race day is here. A sea of people and the multitude of colours flood every visual frame. A few prefer to come in as early as five hours before the race to reserve the spot with the best view. Among the many options available, include the view from the island or from boats floating on the lake. But the most interesting one – only meant for the brave ones – is the stand that is open to people without tickets. There will be plenty of locally brewed alcohol, singing and ardent show of affection for their favourite teams.

But what you must note is that, even here there are a committed few, who will just not compromise on the view!

4. People Fighting to Get the best Views

Kerala-Boat-Race4C

When there are what seems like a hundred boats and a million people in a single lake, it does get a little busy. A few clashes and a few accidents, you can expect.

And few of a different kind (induced by intoxicating liquors or the belief in one’s illusionary superpowers!)

5. Magical Atmosphere with Music

Kerala-Boat-Race-Atmosphere

The ambiance is created not just by the incredibly picturesque race, but also by the music, an essential part of the race. There is music and singing from the boats with enough backing vocals from the crowd. And along with this, is the hysterical cheering when the race is on. It’s a magical atmosphere!

But for some there isn’t a better place than this for drunken contemplation. Finding the inner peace amidst it all.

Trivia: Kerala tops in per capita consumption of alcohol in India. The common belief is that the most amount of planning among the men here happen not before the new financial year but on the day before a dry day.

6. The Maharaja

Where’s the fun if the Maharaja does not come to visit his subjects, you often witness people dressed in the attire of King Mahabali entertain the public in the event.

7. Women in Action

Women in crisp, neat traditional uniforms, ready to conquer the waterway. The teams are strong and much tougher than they look

8. Speedboats

A few fancy speedboats. Well, why not? A little modern touch to the traditional sport.

Kerala-Boat-Race4d

9. Different Emotions

As you would have guessed, an overflow of emotions. On the boats, off the boats and sometimes in water.

10. Cheer the Winners

Croud cheering is always a common energy booster for the racers and winners get the best of it.

Kerala-Boat-Race

And of course the winners. Winning here is not the important thing, it’s the only thing. They have trained for months to make this happen. The teams have had diet restrictions, have had to stay away from their families and work really hard in the hope that they would win the trophy. A silver rolling trophy, a replica of the snake boat, was gifted by Jawaharlal Nehru after he witnessed this amazing race. The team that wins the trophy become the local heroes until the next August when the battle resumes for that coveted place of honour. This has been an incredible experience for me. One that I can try to explain but what I have managed to write does not do justice to the life or the vibrancy seen at the race.
