Beginning 8 August, Emami Art will present three solo exhibitions by Ruma Choudhury, Soma Das and Kushal Ray. Together, the exhibitions bring diverse artistic practices to the gallery, ranging from handmade paper and painting to photography, while exploring themes of ecology, lived experience and Kolkata’s changing urban landscape.

Three Exhibitions Open this August

Emami Art has announced a new exhibition programme featuring three solo exhibitions across its gallery spaces at the Kolkata Centre for Creativity. Opening on 8 August 2026, the exhibitions showcase recent works by Ruma Choudhury, Soma Das and Kushal Ray, each engaging with different aspects of contemporary artistic practice. Spread across Galleries 1, 2 and 3, the programme includes handmade paper installations, paintings, mixed-media works and photography. The exhibitions will remain on view through mid-September, according to the gallery’s announcement.

Ruma Choudhury Examines Ecology Through Handmade Paper

Opening in Gallery 1, Elemental Encounters: Practice as Ecological Archive marks Ruma Choudhury’s debut solo exhibition at Emami Art. The exhibition explores handmade paper as a material shaped by natural processes rather than simply a surface for artistic expression. Using locally sourced plant fibres, Choudhury exposes handmade paper to sunlight, rain, humidity and wind, allowing environmental conditions to leave visible traces on the material. The resulting works examine the relationship between ecology, time and memory, while reflecting the artist’s long-term research into paper-making and environmental awareness.

Soma Das Celebrates the Poetry of Everyday Life

Gallery 2 presents নিত্য – নূতন: The New in the Everyday, featuring Soma Das’s recent paintings and mixed-media works inspired by everyday experiences. Drawing from childhood memories and observations of ordinary people, Das portrays women and men navigating work, family life and moments of leisure. Alongside her signature gouache paintings, the exhibition includes works in wood, terracotta, metal, embroidery and appliqué, highlighting the artist’s continued experimentation with materials while remaining rooted in familiar social experiences.

Kushal Ray Revisits Calcutta Through Photography

In Gallery 3, শহরনামা | Calcutta 1990–1993 presents photographs selected from thousands of negatives created by Kushal Ray during the early 1990s. The exhibition documents everyday life across Calcutta’s streets, neighbourhoods and public spaces, offering a visual record of a city undergoing change. Several photographs are being exhibited as prints for the first time, bringing renewed attention to an important archive of the city’s social and cultural history.

About the Exhibition Programme

Together, the three exhibitions highlight the diversity of contemporary artistic practices represented by Emami Art, spanning environmental art, figurative painting and documentary photography. While each exhibition explores a distinct subject, the programme reflects the gallery’s continued focus on supporting artists whose practices engage with material experimentation, social observation and cultural memory.
