Soothravakyam

Malayalam-OTT-Releases-This-Week-August-25-to-31-2025-Soothravakyam

Christo Xavier is a village-based police officer and is at the same time a math-teacher to children. One day, a strange disappearance causes all of it to fall into chaos. Guided by the director Eugien Jos Chirammel the movie does not rely on flashy twists but is suspenseful. The village backdrop is important; silence is tense and where even whispering is huge.

To the audience, Soothravakyam is not a crime but its consequences. It demonstrates how the event of destruction of the feeling of security within the small community can be caused by one happening. It will be released on Lionsgate.

In his dual identity as cop and teacher, a layer of emotion is brought to the fore by Christo who reminds us that the people in uniform are human and vulnerable. This is the sort of film that rewards patience. If you’re willing to immerse yourself in the mood, it quietly grips you until the final act.

Sambhava Vivaranam Nalarasangham (The Annals of the 4.5 Gang)

Malayalam-OTT-Releases-This-Week-August-25-to-31-2025-Sambhava-Vivaranam-Nalarasangham-(The-Annals-of-the-4.5-Gang

Sambhava Vivaranam Nalarasangham (the 4.5 Gang series) will be released on 29 August and can be watched on SonyLIV. Most believe that it is the most daring new experiment. This shows in contrast to other films whose storylines are smooth and full of happiness, the real nature of the streets of Trivandrum; full of strange individuals who create issues of their own and local gangs.

This is unlike ordinary shows since the show combines comedy and crime. There is no distinct boundary between the two and is usually referred to as dark comedy. The characters are far from perfect, at times even humorous, but their flaws are impossible to ignore.

Kammattam

Malayalam-OTT-Releases-This-Week-August-25-to-31-2025-Kammattam

The Malayalam film Kammattam is all set for its digital premiere on Zee5, offering audiences a chance to enjoy the drama from the comfort of their homes. The movie, which weaves together elements of family ties, emotions, and cultural nuances, is expected to strike a chord with viewers who appreciate meaningful storytelling. With Zee5 expanding its Malayalam catalog, Kammattam’s arrival adds variety and promises a compelling experience for regional cinema lovers eager for fresh releases.

Bigg Boss Malayalam Season 7

Malayalam-OTT-Releases-This-Week-August-25-to-31-2025-Bigg-Boss-Malayalam-Season-7

It is having millions of viewers as it airs on JioHotstar and continues to attract many, as contestants are forced to handle the tense house, form teams and fight over minor details. Other individuals consider reality TV; to be mere light shows. To the fans, however, Bigg Boss has been a massive event and as such, it brings them drama, plans and shows on a daily basis. In comparison with scripted dramas and thrillers, Bigg Boss is unscripted, noisy, and constantly talked about on social media.

Kolahalam

Malayalam-OTT-Releases-This-Week-August-25-to-31-2025-Kolahalam

The title of a comedy, Kolahalam, which can be translated to, noise or disorder, is given as an indicator of everyday tangle. The movie is already released on OTT, however, the hype is that it is a film that feasts on everyday misunderstandings that end up on a runaway tank.

Malayalam films are also famous for comedies where a small incident is transformed into drama, however, humorous. In Kolahalam, we ought to laugh as characters resort to the buffooneries of daily routine, without ever subordinating to a sequence of big action distractions or weighty social commentaries.

With crime thrillers and emotional dramas taking a serious centre stage in a season, deceptively harmless stories such as this are welcome palate cleansers. They make us remember that chaos may be not only tragic, but also strikingly relatable.

Sarkeet

Malayalam-OTT-Releases-This-Week-August-25-to-31-2025-Sarkeet

To be shown on Manorama Max, Sarkeet has a different mood. Directed by Asif Ali, the film is centered on family drama, where feelings do not take turn to action. This genre is great at reflecting actual family setups, the silent battles, the muted love, and even silent tradeoffs that indeed are relationships. The movie will aim to seize these subtle scenes.

Asif Ali takes on the lead role in this show, and the performances are likely to bring the script to life with a memorable touch. Need a story to which you can relate, it happens that, this week the best bet is to read, or perhaps hear, Sarkeet.

Why This Week Feels Different

The thing about the Malayalam OTT releases of the past week is oddly enough, the balance of the offering is envisaged. All titles are aimed at the vacationing of various moods:

  • To those who love mysteries – Soothravakyam offers suspense in the real life of the countryside.
  • In search of comedy Daveyökypooners – Kolahalam is a light coming of chaos.
  • In emotional people – Sarkeet is warmth and reality.
  • To novice film lovers – The 4.5 Gang punches like a gritty and hilarious one.
  • To reality TV fans – the show is Bigg Boss Malayalam Season 7 which promises to deliver on a daily basis.

To a large extent, this list demonstrates that Malayalam narratives are based on real-life but attempt stylistic experimentation.

The streaming platform content in Malayalam has morphed significantly. The Malayalam movies and programs are unlike big pan-Indian blockbusters which depend on spectacle and instead emphasis is put on real life, small performances and use of good writing. They remain in a close proximity to reality even when they are addressing crime or comedy.

This is what has managed to gain Malayalam OTT a huge amount of loyal fans not only in Kerala but also among the viewers in India and even the rest of the world. The honesty and novelty of such stories is appreciated by the people because it is not one more formula among prosayers of larger industries.

What to watch based on your mood

And then you might not know where to start, so here is a short-term key to what to put on First:

  • Curious and analytical? Begin with Soothravakyam because it gradually brings out something of a puzzle, which would leave your mind busy.
  • Stressed and need laughter? Check out Kolahalam. Although there is not much information, it has the potential to bring out humor that would come out of chaos.
  • Feeling sentimental? Feel Sarkeet caress you on with quiet family drama.
  • Craving something bold? There is a combination of tough scenes and satire in Watch The 4.5 Gang.
  • Want quick entertainment? Stream Bigg Boss Season 7 as it offers small daily drama bites.

Final Thoughts

The final week of August had been a good one for Malayalam OTT users. From the suspenseful Soothravakyam to the fun chaos of Kolahalam, the emotional Sarkeet, the sharp satire of The 4.5 Gang, and the unpredictable Bigg Boss the line‑up offers something for everyone.

Malayalam films are characterized with the aesthetic quality of realness and their digital releases maintain the momentum. These stories are not mere amusements; as well as commentary, they criticise what we thought, and sometimes even surprise us, and that is why Malayalam story telling is unique in the culture of India.

Be it any drama, open up your favourite OTT platform, scroll through the titles and experience the magic of the Malayalam movies on your screen whatever your mood this week.

National Sports Day 2025: Significance, Events, and Inspiring Legacy

National Sports Day

National Sports Day: A Celebration Beyond Medals

Each year, on the 29th of August, India twirls in joy to reflect on something greater than just sports. It reflects not just on the awards won by India in sports but on the courage, team spirit, and efforts of our athletes. National Sports Day is not just about medals and trophies. It goes far beyond that. It is about the stories of perseverance, about the players that give it their everything to make the country swell with pride. It is the day of remembering Major Dhyan Chand, the Hockey Wizard of India, who is still revered for the magic he created with his hockey stick.

How do schools and athletes celebrate this day?

For school children, the day is usually celebrated with races, and a day of friendly matches. For athletes, this is the reminder of responsibility and legacy. For the nation, a day to reflect on how far we have travelled in sports and how much further we can move in the field of sports.

History of National Sports Day

History of National Sports Day

The idea of designating 29 August as National Sports Day sprang up in the year 2012, however, the backstory goes way back. There was a need for a day to signify the glory of India as a leading ‘sport power’. This ‘sporting culture’ of India could not be represented by anyone but Major Dhyan Chand.

Why is Dhyan Chand’s legacy considered legendary?

Major Dhyan Chand’s legacy is so overwhelming that his game felt much bigger than life. It is said that opponents would occasionally stop playing, fascinated by his exceptional control of the ball. Adolf Hitler was so impressed during the 1936 Berlin Olympics, that he offered Major Dhyan Chand a position in the Army of Germany.

Dhyan Chand’s Influence on Indian Sports

The scale of Dhyan Chand’s influence on the ground is so enormous, his birthday was an excellent choice to be celebrated as National Sports Day, a day that meant more than medals and victories but rather dignity, teamwork, and uniting the nation, from India’s first gold medal in the Olympics in 1928 to today, continues providing inspiration for generations, reminding us how sports can unite and elevate India.

Major Dhyan Chand: The Hockey Wizard

Major Dhyan Chand was born in Allahabad on 29th August 1905 and became the greatest hockey player the world has ever known. When he first joined hockey, he had little interest in it. However, after joining the Indian Army, he practiced constantly. He got the title ‘Chand’ because he would practice hockey at night under the moonlight.

The Golden Era of Indian Hockey

He became the bedrock of Indian hockey from 1928-36. This period became the golden period of sports in India. During this golden period, India won three consecutive Olympic golds. Fans would get mesmerized watching Dhyan Chand play hockey. While some also accused him of using a magnet in his stick.

How many goals did Dhyan Chand score in his career?

During the course of his sport career, Dhyan Chand scored more than 400 international goals and around 1,000 goals in total. More than his achievements in the term of medals, Major Dhyan Chand is remembered for his sportsmanship and dedication for the country.

Honors and Awards for Dhyan Chand

In 1956, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his legacy. Further, in 2021, India’s highest honor in sports was renamed the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna (previously known as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award), after our Hockey Wizard. He continues to inspire sportsmen in India even in the present.

Significance of National Sports Day

Significance of National Sports Day

National Sports Day is much more than just any ceremony in Delhi. Its significance is felt throughout the nation. Schools hold races, tournaments, and fitness challenges. Students participate in these events to reflect on the importance of sports for the nation and the youth. Sports ambassadors provide motivational video talks to help motivate youth. Awareness drives are held to promote the value of physical activity.

What initiatives are promoted on this day?

In addition to this, the government uses this occasion to promote its various sports development initiatives like Khelo India and Fit India Movement to support better sporting infrastructure and a healthier population. The intent of National Sports Day is simple- “every Indian, regardless of their desire to be a professional athlete, should make sports or fitness a part of their routine”. The Government also presents various prestigious awards on this day, to recognize the contributions in sports.

Awards Presented on National Sports Day

Award Name Purpose Named After
Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award Highest sporting honor in India Major Dhyan Chand
Arjuna Award To recognise consistent excellence in sports Arjuna from Mahabharata
Dronacharya Award Recognise outstanding coaches Guru Dronacharya
Dhyan Chand Award Lifetime achievement in sports Major Dhyan Chand

Legacy of Major Dhyan Chand

  • Maor Dhyan Chand won three Olympic gold medals for India. These were in 1928, 1932, and 1936.
  • He scored over 400 goals in his international hockey career, and over 1000 goals in his entire career, national and international matches combined.
  • He was offered by Adolf Hitler to join the German Army after the 1936 Olympics. However, Major Dhyan Chand refused.
  • In 1956, the Government of India recognised the achievements of Major Dhyan Chand, honouring him with the Padma Bhushan.
  • The Government of India renamed the highest sporting award in the country after Major Dhyan Chand in 2021.
  • The Dhyan Chand National Stadium in Delhi was named after him in 2002.
  • India Post issues special stamps in the honour of Major Dhyan Chand.

How is Dhyan Chand remembered in culture and cinema?

Dhyan Chand has been revered even in popular culture. Movies like Chak de! India, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Gold, showcasing the early triumphs of India in Olympics, and in many more documentaries. The government backs up this movement by launching several initiatives such as Khelo India. Further, it backs the sporting infrastructure in the country.

National Sports Day Today

However, in the present scenario, the National Sports Day signifies much more than a celebration of Major Dhyan Chand. It has outgrown calling every Indian to reflect on the sporting values. Now, it is a huge movement representing India’s global aspirations in sports.

Honoring Every Sportsman in India

The National Sports Day acknowledges every sportsman, famous or not, who has been chasing the dream of bringing pride to the nation. It acknowledges our heroes, our champions, and every soul that has a sporting spirit in their hearts.

Elder Care Services Near Me-01

Caring for ageing parents or elderly family members is a responsibility filled with love, but it also comes with challenges. As seniors age, they may need help with daily activities, medical care, or companionship. That’s where elder care services step in.

Whether you are searching for professional caregivers, home nursing, or support communities, finding the right option nearby makes all the difference. If you have been looking up elder care services near me, here’s a comprehensive guide to help you make an informed decision.

Why Elder Care Services Matter

Aging often brings physical, emotional, and social changes. Elder care services provide support that ensures safety, dignity, and comfort for seniors. Some of the key reasons families consider these services include:

  • Assistance with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and meals.
  • Professional medical monitoring and nursing support.
  • Emotional support and companionship to fight loneliness.
  • Specialized care for conditions like dementia, Alzheimer’s, or mobility issues.
  • Peace of mind for families who may not live close to their elderly loved ones.

With the right elder care solution, seniors can enjoy independence while still receiving the care they deserve.

Types of Elder Care Services

Elder care is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Depending on individual needs, families can explore different forms of care. Common types include:

  • In-Home Care Services – Caregivers visit the senior’s home to assist with daily living, medication reminders, or companionship.
  • Nursing Care at Home – Professional nurses provide medical support, post-surgery recovery assistance, and chronic illness management.
  • Day Care Centres – Seniors spend the day at a care facility engaging in activities, exercises, and social interaction.
  • Assisted Living Facilities – Residential communities designed for seniors who need ongoing support but also value independence.
  • Hospice and Palliative Care – Specialized care for terminally ill patients focusing on comfort and quality of life.

Understanding which category suits your loved one’s needs is the first step in narrowing down the right provider.

How to Find Trusted Elder Care Services Near Me

Searching “elder care services near me” online will give you plenty of options, but not all services are reliable or suited for your family. Here’s a step-by-step approach:

1. Assess Your Needs

  1. Is daily assistance enough, or is medical care required?
  2. Does the elder prefer staying at home or would benefit from community-based living?
  3. Is specialized care for dementia, Alzheimer’s, or mobility issues necessary?

2. Research Options Nearby

  • Use online directories and local listings.
  • Ask friends, neighbours, or colleagues for recommendations.
  • Check reviews and testimonials of local elder care providers.

3. Verify Credentials

  • Ensure the service provider has licensed and trained staff.
  • Ask about background checks for caregivers.
  • Confirm if medical caregivers are certified professionals.

4. Visit and Evaluate

  • Visit the facility or arrange a meeting with the caregiver.
  • Check the cleanliness, safety protocols, and overall environment.
  • Talk to current residents or families for honest feedback.

5. Understand Costs and Services

  • Get a clear breakdown of pricing models.
  • Check what is included in the package—medical, meals, or activities.
  • Compare services with at least two or three providers before finalizing.

Benefits of Choosing Elder Care Services Near Me

Choosing a service close to home or within your city has unique advantages:

  • Easy Accessibility – Quick visits by family members are possible.
  • Familiar Surroundings – Seniors feel safer staying near their community.
  • Local Support Networks – Access to nearby hospitals, pharmacies, and emergency care.
  • Personalized Care – Local caregivers often understand cultural, dietary, and language needs better.

Signs of a Reliable Elder Care Service

When evaluating providers, look out for these positive indicators:

  • Staff who show compassion and patience.
  • Personalized care plans tailored to the elder’s health and lifestyle.
  • Transparent communication with family members.
  • Availability of emergency support 24/7.
  • Encouragement of recreational activities, mental stimulation, and social bonding.

Questions to Ask Before Finalizing

Before choosing a service, consider asking these questions:

  1. What qualifications do the caregivers and nurses hold?
  2. How do you handle emergencies or medical needs?
  3. Can you provide a trial period before long-term commitment?
  4. What safety protocols are followed for seniors?
  5. Are there flexible options for part-time or full-time care?

Making the Right Choice

Selecting the right elder care services is not just about convenience, it’s about trust, empathy, and ensuring your loved one’s comfort. Every senior deserves care that respects their independence while offering the support they need. This can mean looking for a provider who can offer personalized support, such as help with dementia management or fall prevention, alongside consistent, compassionate personal care. By taking time to evaluate local options and asking the right questions, for example, looking at the range of services and caregiver consistency offered by this Philly home care provider, families can confidently choose services that align with their values and requirements.

Final Thoughts

When searching for elder care services near me, keep in mind that the best choice balances professional expertise with genuine compassion. Every senior’s journey is unique, and so should be their care plan. Whether it’s in-home assistance, a senior day center, or a long-term care facility, the goal is the same—ensuring dignity, safety, and a better quality of life for your loved ones.

The journey of caregiving is made easier when trusted elder care services are by your side. Take the time to explore, verify, and select the right support system. It will not only enhance your elder’s well-being but also bring peace of mind to your entire family.

Akbar Padamsee: A Poignant Cover Work

Lot-24-Akbar-Padamsee-Untitled (Nude)

On the cover is a powerful painting by Akbar Padamsee, titled ‘Untitled (Nude)’ (Lot No. 24, Est. ₹3–4 crore) depicting a solitary figure in profile which emanates a sense of vulnerability and profound loneliness. The work is a striking juxtaposition of the nude figure against the bold background, that displays tonal and textural interplay, setting tone of the image.

F N Souza: Expressionist Architectural Vision

Lot-39-F-N-Souza-The-Castle

A major highlight is Lot No. 39– a landscape made in 1954 by F N Souza, is a stark and brooding depiction of an architectural structure executed in his distinctive bold, reduced to angular geometric planes that convey both solidity and tension. Estimated at 4–6 crore, the artwork reflects Souza’s interest in expressionist distortion and psychological intensity in architectural subjects.

Sakti Burman: Myth and Dreamlike Vision

Lot-10-Sakti-Burman-Durga

Lot No. 10, titled ‘Durga’, is an exceptional work by Sakti Burman. The work is a hallmark of Burman’s technique as he attempts to bring his signature dreamlike vision to the mythological theme of Goddess Durga. His unique synthesis of Indian mythology with a European modernist sensibility creates a timeless tableau, where the divine and the human coalesce within a poetic, fantastical realm. The lot will be offered at an estimate of 1.5–2.5 crore.

M F Husain: Abstract Experimentations

Lot-27-M-F-Husain-Untitled-(Triptych)

Another landmark entry is an ‘Untitled’ artwork by M F Husain (Lot No. 27, Est. ₹3–4 crore), an abstract work reflecting his dynamic engagement with form and colour, moving away from figuration into a more experimental visual language.

Manjit Bawa: Rare 1989 Large-Scale Work

Manjit-Bawa-Rare-1989-Large-Scale-Work

Lot No. 21 is a rare, large-scale work by Manjit Bawa, executed in 1989. The work reveals an early phase of his artistic practice, where figuration carried a raw, visceral energy. The imagery recalls mythic struggle and primal instincts, rendered with Bawa’s characteristic stylisation and economy of line. The work is estimated to sell at 2.5–3 crore.

Anjolie Ela Menon: The Window Motif

Lot-4-Anjolie-Ela-Menon-Untitled

Also featured is a compelling work by Anjolie Ela Menon (Lot No. 04, Est ₹1–1.5 crore). The motif of the window, often appearing as both an ‘objet trouvé’ and a symbolic element, has remained central to her artistic practice.

Krishen Khanna: Bandwallas Series

Lot-23-Krishen-Khanna-Bandwallas-(Diptych)

Another impactful work in the auction is a diptych by Krishen Khanna from his renowned Bandwallas series. Also titled ‘Bandwallas’, the striking work (Lot No. 23, Est ₹2–3 crore) exemplifies the artist’s poignant engagement with the motif of wedding musicians. The faceless, uniformed musicians appear as anonymous figures, symbolic of resilience amid hardship. The interplay of festive colour with quiet melancholy underscores Khanna’s empathetic perspective.

J. Swaminathan: Transcendental Abstraction

Lot-30-J-Swaminathan-Untitled

In a powerful reflection of transcendental abstraction, J. Swaminathan’s ‘Untitled’, estimated at ₹1.5–2.5 crore, unites abstraction with elemental symbolism. With triangular forms set against textured planes of ochre, grey and muted red, the work (Lot No. 30) reflects a primal energy rooted in tribal and folk vocabularies.

The preparations for the festivities have also begun with people decorating pandals and temples, all set to welcome Bappa. Here is the ultimate guide to a perfect Ganesh Chaturthi, with the dates, timings and muhurat, all in one place.

  • The Chaturthi tithi begins at 1:54 PM on 26 August 2025 and ends at 3:44 PM on 27 August 2025. This is the ideal time to install the idol of Lord Ganesha at your home.
  • The Madhyahana Puja Muhurat is between 11:12 AM and 1:44 PM on August 27 2025. This is the muhurat for Ganesh Aarti.
  • Ganesh Chaturthi ends with the Visarjan of the deity. Saturday, 6 September 2025, is the day of Visarjan.
  • The festival lasts for eleven days, with the Anant Chaturdashi immersion marking the end.
  • Avoid Moon sightings on the evening of 26 August and all day on 27 August.

Rituals and Traditions of Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi-Modak

The festival begins with the families bringing Lord Ganesha to their homes. On the first day, the family members install the idols at homes or in pandals. From the first day itself, until the last day, the family members worship the deity daily. This is done by chanting shlokas with daily aarti and preparing offerings for the god. Lord Ganesha loves modak and hence, it is treated as the main prasadam.

The festivities last for eleven days. During these days, various events and cultural programs are organised at the local level. Communities come together to plan bhajans and parties to welcome the deity. These days, the trend of going eco-friendly is on the rise. Due to this, many devotees have stopped buying artificially coloured idols and instead make idols at home from clay, or even food items like chocolate. They later distribute the melted chocolate offering.

Regional Celebrations Across India

Ganesh Chaturthi-Regional Celebrations

Ganesh Chaturthi is extremely popular in the state of Maharashtra. However, it is celebrated all across the country, in various states. There is a difference in ways of celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi, and each state has their regional aspect associated with the rituals. For instance:

  • In Maharashtra, Lalbaugcha Raja is famous. The state witnesses large pandals for Lord Ganesha and other cultural programs.
  • In Karnataka, the devotees celebrate Gowri Habba one day prior to the rituals of Ganesh Chaturthi. This puja is associated with Goddess Gawri.
  • Andhra Pradesh and Telangana showcase massive idols of Lord Ganesha. These idols often follow trends associated with Bollywood characters or youth’s trending memes.
  • Goa and Tamil Nadu witness community feasts and local traditions for the celebration.

5. Ganesh Visarjan 2025: The Grand Farewell

Ganesh Visarjan-01

The last day of Ganesh Chaturthi is Visarjan day. On this grand farewell, the idol of Lord Ganesha is submerged in water. The Visarjan date for 2025 is 6 September, that is, Saturday. The Visarjan Muhurat list is as follows:

Muhurat for Visarjan on September 6th

  • Morning Muhurat (Shubha): 07:36 AM – 09:10 AM
  • Afternoon Muhurat (Chara, Labha, Amrit): 12:19 PM – 05:02 PM
  • Evening Muhurat (Labha): 06:37 PM – 08:02 PM

Muhurat for Visarjan on September 7th

  • Night Muhurat (Shubha, Amrit, Chara): 09:28 PM – 01:45 AM
  • Early Morning Muhurat (Labha): 04:36 AM – 06:02 AM

These timings are based on the Vedic Chaughadia Muhurats. There are seven Muhurats in total, with three good and three bad, and one neutral. Labha, Amrit, and Shubha are the good Muhurats, ruled by different planets, while Chara is the neutral muhurat.

Ganesh Visarjan-02

Like many others, you can also adopt eco-friendly visarjan practices to avoid a negative impact of the festival on the environment. Go for handmade and locally made idols. Do not select idols with artificial colouring. Your simple step can help the world in multiple ways.choosing clay-made idol instead of the idol made of plaster of paris and artificial colours will not only help the environment but also the small scale artisans. This year, instead of performing the Visarjan at a big river, try doing so at home. Water your plants with that water and reuse that clay at your home. This will make Bappa happy.

The main processions of the Ganesh Visarjan will be organised in big cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Hyderabad. But this does not stop devotees from other regions and cities. Local-level processions are carried out everywhere.

Govt’s Bold Move to Save Endangeared Folk Languages and Oral Traditions

Govt’s-Bold-Move-to-Save-Endangered-Folk-Languages-and-Oral-Traditions-01

In the fast-globalizing world, folk languages and oral traditions which used to be the blood of communities are now at a threat of extinction. Urbanization, emigration, and mainstream language supremacy are causing an alarming rate of loss of many traditional dialects, story telling techniques, folk songs and other aspects of cultures.

Linguists note that every 2 weeks, a language dies somewhere across the world, with it, centuries of culture, history and unique knowledge also die. The preservation and documentation of these endangered folk languages and oral traditions and thus has become an immediate cultural, as well as, academic concern.

According to the Atlas of the World’s Languages in Danger that was compiled by UNESCO, there are almost 3,000 languages that are endangered in the world today. In India which has more than 19,500 dialects and languages, many tribal languages including Sidi, Nihali, and Toto are spoken by less than a few thousands. As these languages die out, so do oral traditions including the folklore, lullabies, proverbs, and indigenous rituals.

This is further affected by the emergence of digital media whereby the minority voices are further relegated by the domination of dominant languages like English, Hindi, or Mandarin. To many young speakers, learning of global languages is associated with schooling and job prospects, and thus the tendency to abandon their native languages and focus on the global languages.

Why Folk Languages and Oral Traditions are Relevant

Folk languages do not exist only as a form of communication, but they rather serve as a holder of identity, history, and world-view. Oral traditions especially are an insight into how communities interpret the environment, life and how they explain the mysteries of life. Traditional songs contain wisdom of agricultural experience, folk tales have moral values, and oral epics reflect historical memory.

Various efforts are made across the globe to protect endangered languages. The UNESCO plan to revive dying languages is the Decade of Indigenous Languages (20222032), which tries to attract attention and develop materials that will help to revive dying languages. In India, the People Linguistic Survey of India (PLSI) and the Bhasha Research Center, have documented the dying languages and oral traditions so that they do not become extinct.

Use of Digital Platforms

Digital platforms are also taking centre stage in ensuring that. Colleges and cultural organizations are developing online archives of folk songs, oral history, and folk proverbs. As an example, the North East Indian Oral Traditions project has been recording oral traditions in Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram: myths and songs. Equally, endangered languages are being taught through podcasts, YouTube channels, and mobile apps, teaching young people the languages in interactive ways.

The Indian Ministry of Culture and Sahitya Akademi have initiated the programs which fund research, organize folk festivals, and publish collections of oral literature. States such as Odisha and Rajasthan are now promoting school level instruction of local languages as a way of instilling pride in local culture.

Under the Guru Shishya Parampara Scheme run by the Zonal Cultural Centres (ZCCs), traditional masters train young disciples to safeguard cultural knowledge. As part of this initiative, 42 endangered oral traditions have been documented across various states and regions of India, ensuring their continuity and preservation.

Community Involvement

Researchers emphasize that preservation will never be successful without the contribution of the actual native speakers. The oral tradition and the folk languages must be restored by community-based initiatives. The elders, storytellers and folk artists should be encouraged to pass their knowledge towards younger generations. Intergenerational storytelling sessions, folk music workshops, and cultural festivals establish places where traditions are kept alive through practice as opposed to being in an archive.

In other areas, communities are using technology to repossess their voices. A case in point is that the Sumi Nagas have created a dictionary program in their language, and the Santali community has adopted Ol Chiki script and online publishing systems to foster the use of their language. The examples of grassroots efforts also demonstrate how progressive technology can be used to support ancient preservation.

Conclusion

The survival and recording of dying folk languages and oral traditions must be multi-faceted-academic research, government involvement, digital technology and most importantly the involvement of the community. Losing thousands of words, humanity will lose not only a great number of words, but also a very specific view of nature, spirituality, and human relationships.

With the movement of societies towards modernization it is important to keep in mind that with progress the past is not to be forgotten. Saving endangered folk languages is not just the preservation of cultural diversity, but also the guarantee that future generations will receive all the richness of voices, songs and stories that have characterized humanity throughout centuries.
